Noncognitive Factors and Student Long-Run Success: Comparing the Predictive Validity of Observable Academic Behaviors and Social-Emotional Skills
Noncognitive constructs such as self-efficacy, social awareness, and academic engagement are widely acknowledged as critical components of human capital, but systematic data collection on such skills in school systems is complicated by conceptual ambiguities, measurement challenges and resource constraints. This study addresses this issue by comparing the predictive validity of two most widely used metrics on noncogntive outcomes—observable acade…
Incorporating Evidence-Based Practice Learning Activities Throughout Family Nurse Practitioner Clinical Practicum Courses
BACKGROUND: Evidence-based practice (EBP) is crucial to high-quality health care, yet nurse practitioner graduates report low levels of confidence in their EBP abilities. This may be because of limited incorporation of EBP learning opportunities outside of foundational course-work. METHOD: Family nurse practitioner (FNP) program faculty incorporated EBP learning activities across the three-semester clinical year curriculum, and the activities sca…
Sexual Activity, Pleasure, and Testosterone: A Biopsychosocial Analysis of Women Living With and Without HIV in British Columbia, Canada
Sexual health research comparing women with and without human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) often pathologizes women living with HIV, overlooking biopsychosocial factors that may drive differences between groups. Low testosterone levels have been reported among women living with HIV; however, how this may impact sexual health outcomes remains unclear. We compared the prevalence of sexual activity and sexual pleasure between women with and without …

A Sociologist in Tech
The technology industry offers exciting opportunities to practice social science research. Understanding the impact of technology on society and improving that impact is now a career path that utilizes advanced social scientific training and literature, from grand theory to empirical methods and studies. Applying this training to industry problems is enriching and brings about new appreciation for many types of scientific literature
Balancing Categorical Conventionality in Music
Research on the relationship between categorical unconventionality and popularity has produced mixed results. While many accounts suggest that unconventionality is penalized, much sociological theorizing indicates that success comes from a delicate balancing act between conventional and unconventional offerings. Using data on the genre self-classifications of over 2 million musicians and bands across the United States, the authors find broad supp…

Human API as a research source in health care
This paper illustrates how the concept of "Human API" can help cancer post-treatment cancer patients with challenges they face once they are released from the hospital. The results and implications of this semester long graduate project will help illuminate how the Human API through its various data collection methods could potentially play a larger role in extended cancer care. The research will also attempt to determine if hyper-connected netwo…
Self-relations in Social Relations
This article contributes to an ongoing theoretical effort to extend the insights of relational and network sociology into adjacent domains. We integrate Simmel's late theory of the relational self into the formal analysis of social relations, generating a framework for theorizing forms of association among self-relating individuals. On this model, every 'node' in an interaction has relations not only to others but also to itself, specifically bet…
Simmel's Law of the Individual and the Ethics of the Relational Self
Georg Simmel's final work, The View of Life, concludes his lifelong engagement with Immanuel Kant by 'inverting' Kant's Categorical Imperative to produce an ethics of authentic individuality. While Kant's moral imperative is universal to all individuals but particular to their discrete acts, Simmel's Law of the Individual is particular to each individual but universal to all the individual's acts. We assess the significance of Simmel's formulatio…

The Lie of Power: Empowerment as Impotence
The arguments in this paper are based upon an ethnographic description of the circumstances surrounding the investigation of a complaint against the Governors of a small rural Primary School. This is an empirical study of a local struggle in which the role of the researcher as a prisoner in a web of power is highlighted. The case is first analyzed using structural and functional understandings of power as described by Hardy and Clegg. However, th…
When is an object not an object? The effect of ‘meaning’ upon the copying of line drawings
A series of studies shows that errors in copying line drawings of a table are directly related to the knowledge that the lines represent a table, and not to difficulty in drawing the lines themselves. When children copy the component parts of line drawings of a table the pattern of error is very similar to that obtained when the whole line drawing is copied or when a table is drawn from imagination. When the same component parts are copied withou…
