A reflective commentary of teaching critical thinking of privacy and surveillance in UK higher education
The importance of data literacy and the need of raising and improving it through formal educational channel or public engagement has repeatedly been flagged up in each of the past Economic and Social Research Council-funded Data-Psst! Seminar I attended in 2014–2016. There is a real demand for action taking. I took advantage of the knowledge I learned from the Data-Psst seminars and devised a module teaching Level 5 undergraduate media students a…
Co-Observing the Weather, Co-Predicting the Climate: Human Factors in Building Infrastructures for Crowdsourced Data
This paper investigates the embodied performance of ‘doing citizen science’. It examines how ‘citizen scientists’ produce scientif c data using the resources available to them, and how their socio-technical practices and emotions impact the construction of a crowdsourced data infrastructure. We found that conducting citizen science is highly emotional and experiential, but these individual experiences and feelings tend to get lost or become invis…
Data journeys: Capturing the socio-material constitution of data objects and flows
In this paper, we discuss the development and piloting of a new methodology for illuminating the socio-material constitution of data objects and flows as data move between different sites of practice. The data journeys approach contributes to the development of critical, qualitative methodologies that can address the geographic and temporal scale of emerging knowledge infrastructures, and capture the 'life of data' from their initial generation t…
The role of the New Guinea cross-equatorial flow in the interannual variability of the western North Pacific summer monsoon
The western North Pacific (WNP) monsoon trough from 1958 to 2001 shows a binary-like feature in August and September, with more than half being either an imposing presence or a total absence. One of the major moisture sources maintaining the WNP monsoon trough is the low-level moisture advection laterally driven by the low-level cross-equatorial flow that originates from the Banda Sea and Solomon Sea. By decomposing contributions to the cross-equ…
