  • The Early Holocene archaeology of Florida: Geospatial approaches to understanding Bolen mobility

    Jessi J Halligan, David K Thulman et al.•ARTICLE•Southeastern Archaeology•2023•References: 8

Three of the most influential archaeological models in the southeastern US have argued that early foragers organized their lifeways via seasonal movement along major drainage basins; around access to raw material sources, crossing drainage basins; or around group foraging needs, following central place foraging models. We examine the distribution of Early Holocene Bolen sites in Florida in light of these models by combining Florida Master Site Fi…

  • An Aquapelagic Evolution? Developing sustainable tourism futures in Galápagos, Ecuador

    Open Access•Adam Burke•ARTICLE•Shima•2020

In less than 200 years, the Galpagos Islands have experienced a fast-tracked transformation from an inhospitable archipelago to a glamorous ecotourism hot spot. Waves of extractive industries and the development of conservation and ecotourism have shaped Galapagueo communities. This article draws upon critical literature to analyse Galpagos as an aquapelagic society -wherein residents' identities and sense of belonging are conditioned by the inte…

  • Occluded algorithms

    Open Access•Adam Burke•ARTICLE•Big Data & Society•2019•Cited by: 4•References: 13

Two definitions of algorithm, their uses, and their implied models of computing in society, are reviewed. The first, termed the structural programming definition, aligns more with usage in computer science, and as the name suggests, the intellectual project of structured programming. The second, termed the systemic definition, is more informal and emerges from ethnographic observations of discussions of software in both professional and everyday …

Jane Jih, Gem M Le et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2016•References: 25

Objectives. To evaluate the efficacy of an in-language intervention of 2 lectures plus printed materials versus printed materials alone on knowledge and adherence to nutrition and physical activity guidelines among older Chinese Americans in San Francisco, California. Methods. From August 2010 to September 2013, we randomized 756 Chinese Americans aged 50 to 75 years to either lectures plus print (n = 361) or print (n = 357). Clusters were the pa…

  • New Political Space, Old Tensions: History, Identity and Violence in Rakhine State, Myanmar

    Adam Burke•ARTICLE•Contemporary Southeast Asia•2016•Cited by: 5•References: 5

Repeated violent attacks and arson campaigns perpetrated by organized gangs targeted Muslim communities in Rakhine State of Myanmar in 2012 and 2013. The attacks came after decades of tension between the Muslim minority and the Rakhine Buddhist majority. Many Muslims--mainly those often known as Rohingya--in Rakhine State are effectively stateless, having failed to attain any form of citizenship. (1) Campaigns against Muslims in Rakhine State, wh…

  • How do international development agencies approach peacebuilding in a sub-national conflict

    Adam Burke•ARTICLE•Development in Practice•2013•Cited by: 1•References: 9

International development agencies often promote approaches that link aid and peacebuilding. However, the gap between what agencies say and what they actually do is demonstrated by the mixed response to subnational conflict in Thailand's Far South between 2007 and 2012. Over this period, numerous agencies demonstrated little interest in addressing the conflict. Some agencies did over time try to support peacebuilding, although domestic government…

  • Hollow Words: Foreign Aid and Peacebuilding in Peripheral Conflicts

Adam Burke•ARTICLE•Asian Affairs An American Review•2012

Many foreign aid agencies promote peacebuilding as a global policy objective. This paper considers how they have fared in practice in subnational, “peripheral” conflicts in Asia that have relatively low international profiles, using case material from Aceh in Indonesia, the Far South of Thailand, and Sri Lanka. Foreign aid has supported long-term economic growth in these countries but typically failed to address peacebuilding concerns or associat…

  • Music, memory and modern life: Saint Etienne's London

    Adam Burke•ARTICLE•Screen•2010•Cited by: 1

Blending city symphony and essay film, the cinematic collaborations of Paul Kelly, Kieran Evans and the pop group Saint Etienne constitute a lament for the disappearance of mid-century modern London. All deeply elegiac in tone, Finisterre (2003), What Have You Done Today Mervyn Day? (2006) and This is Tomorrow (2007) form a loose trilogy about the ways in which Thatcherite and Blairite efforts to modernize London, to secure its central place in t…

  • Peacebuilding and rebuilding at ground level: Practical constraints and policy objectives in Aceh

    Adam Burke•ARTICLE•Conflict Security and Development•2008•Cited by: 1•References: 6

Useful lessons can be drawn from international involvement in development and peacebuilding in Aceh, 2005–2006. Over this period, Aceh emerged from decades of internal conflict through a peace agreement between the Government of Indonesia and the Free Aceh Movement (or GAM). Although political shifts across Indonesia are widely accepted as the main reason why the agreement has held to date, international bodies played valuable supporting roles in…

  • Traditional Medicine in China Today: Implications for Indigenous Health Systems in a Modern World

Adam Burke, Yim-Yu Wong et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2003•Cited by: 5•References: 11

In the United States, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is recognized by the National Institutes of Health as an effective complementary and alternative medicine modality, widely used by consumers and growing as a profession.1–3 Ironically, while TCM is expanding in the United States, it may be contracting in China as a result of dramatic health care reforms and changing cultural values. There is, however, little information in Western literatur…
