  • Bipartite question formation in Sm’algyax

    Open Access•Colin Brown•ARTICLE•Glossa a journal of general…•2026

Matrix questions in Sm’algyax (Tsimshianic; British Columbia, Alaska) are doubly marked. Wh-questions involve the fronting of a wh-expression to the clause-initial position, together with the interrogative clitic =u; polar questions are introduced by the complementizer ał—diachronically derived from negation—and additionally bear the clitic =ii. By contrast, embedded questions only exhibit a single component: wh-fronting for wh-questions and a co…

  • Conjectural questions in Sm’algyax

    Colin Brown•ARTICLE•Folia Linguistica•2025

This paper discusses evidentials and their behaviour in interrogative sentences, based on novel data from Sm’algyax (Tsimshianic, British Columbia/Alaska). Typically, evidentials in declarative sentences receive a Speaker-anchored orientation (“According to my evidence, p ”), and in interrogative sentences they receive an Addressee-anchored orientation (“According to your evidence, Q ?”). This shift from Speaker to Addressee in questions is refer…

  • Public knowledge and attitudes towards antibiotic use across England – pre- and post-pandemic

Open Access•Ellie Gilham, Brieze Read et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2025

This paper highlights some concerning trends. Knowledge regarding AMR and the specific infections that antibiotics can treat has reverted to pre-pandemic levels, while levels of uncertainty about AMR and antibiotic use have increased. Although high, trust in HCPs has declined. Therefore, future interventions may wish to support HCPs to build trust with their patients and consider how care pathways can promote this

  • Irrealis-marked interrogatives as rhetorical questions

    Open Access•Colin Brown•ARTICLE•Open Linguistics•2023

I describe and compare two strategies to form rhetorical questions (RQs) in Sm’algyax (Tsimshianic). I show that one kind is isomorphic to ordinary, information-seeking questions, and is compatible with positive and negative answers, while the second is marked with irrealis morphology and only allows negative answers. I provide evidence from answerability and embedding to suggest that both types of RQs in Sm’algyax behave like questions in terms …

  • Assessing the opportunity costs of Chinese herder compliance with a payment for environmental services scheme

Open Access•Karl Behrendt, Colin Brown et al.•ARTICLE•Ecological Economics•2021•Cited by: 1

Addressing serious grassland degradation without exacerbating already low herder incomes is a major challenge for the Chinese government. In response, the Grassland Ecosystem Subsidy and Award Scheme (GESAS) was introduced in 2011 where herders receive payments if they comply with specified stocking rates set at more sustainable levels. However, compliance with GESAS, as well as low herder incomes in some years, is an ongoing issue. Using a stoch…

  • Development cooperation in water and sanitation

    Open Access•Colin Brown, Colin B Brown et al.•ARTICLE•Ciência & Saúde Coletiva•2017

The water and sanitation sector is verifiably receiving increased attention and funding through international development cooperation. Not least because of the way that it affects incentives and institutions in partner countries, development cooperation can have either positive or negative effects on human rights though. The consolidated frameworks for the human rights to water and sanitation is becoming linked to the international community’s co…

    Open Access•Colin Brown, Colin B Brown et al.•ARTICLE•Ciência & Saúde Coletiva•2016

The recognition of the human right to water and sanitation (HRtWS) by the United Nations General Assembly and Human Rights Council in 2010 constituted a significant political measure whose direct consequences are still being assessed. Previous to this date, the HRtWS and its link to a healthy life and adequate standard of living had been recognised in diverse legal and judicial spheres worldwide, in some cases under the pressure of the initiative…

The study of sport - its social, political, cultural and economic aspects - is a well-established academic field, scholars widely acknowledging its significance in understanding how a society is organized and understood. As Perkin (1992:211) puts it: The history of societies is reflected more vividly in the way they spend their leisure than in their politics or their work [...] the history of sport gives a unique insight into the way a society ch…

  • Using consecutive Rapid Participatory Appraisal studies to assess, facilitate and evaluate health and social change in community settings

Open Access•Colin Brown, Colin S Brown et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2006

Rapid Participatory Appraisal proved valuable in assessing long-term change. The community's continuing needs were identified, but they could not facilitate and sustain change without the strategic support of key regional and national agencies. Many repeatedly voiced concerns lay outwith local control: local needs assessment must be supported at higher levels to be effective

  • Ground‐penetrating radar facies as an aid to sequence stratigraphic analysis

Open Access•Alastair Ruffell, Louise Geraghty et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological Prospection•2004

This paper describes the advantages of interpreting ground‐penetrating radar (GPR) facies in a sequence stratigraphic context. These data have been collected adjacent to the River Shannon at Clonmacnoise Castle in central Ireland and demonstrate that stratigraphy is not necessarily made up of horizontal isochronous surfaces; some reflective surfaces are more important than others in interpretation and that two‐dimensional sections must be interpr…

    Open Access•Colin Brown•ARTICLE•Modern Asian Studies•1994•Cited by: 4•References: 4

Comparatively little of a scholarly nature has been written about Indonesian trade unions, particularly on the two decades from 1945 to 1965 when, like the political parties to which so many of them were affiliated, the unions had their heyday. This paper focuses on the development of trade unions in one specific industry: refined sugar production. The period to be examined-1945 to 1949-runs from the proclamation of Indonesian independence by Suk…

There is an important need for a wider public recognition of psychological approaches to the design and introduction of the new work systems based on microelectronics. The economic and political climate in the UK has not been very supportive of social science orientations, however, and approaches which have been influenced by psychological theory have been limited in their effects. Contributions made by ergonomics, socio‐technical theory and part…

The ERP results provide evidence for M electrophysiological response to syntactic processing that is qualitatively different from established ERP responses to semantic processing. We refer to this electro-physiologica…
