  • Citizenship in times of crisis: Biosocial state–citizen relations during Covid-19 in Austria

Open Access•Isabella M Radhuber, Christian Haddad et al.•ARTICLE•BioSocieties•2024

Drawing upon 152 in-depth qualitative interviews with residents in Austria carried out in the first year of the pandemic, this article discusses how people’s experiences with COVID-19 policies reflect and reshape state–citizen relations. Coinciding with a significant government crisis, the first year of COVID-19 in Austria saw pandemic measures justified with reference to a biological, often medical understanding of health that framed disease pre…

  • The Security-Innovation Nexus in (Geo-)Political Imagination

Open Access•Christian Haddad, Dagmar Vorlíček et al.•ARTICLE•Geopolitics•2024•Cited by: 7•References: 84

Security and innovation have become increasingly entangled at the level of political rationalities, imagination, and material practice, forming what we conceptualise as the 'nexus of security-innovation'. The extension of and various shifts in this nexus merit critical attention, as it engenders the emergence of new technopolitical issues, conflicts, and novel sets of actors involved. This article constitutes both an Introduction and an individua…

  • Between superimposition and local initiatives: Making sense of ‘implementation gaps’ as a governance problem of antimicrobial resistance

Open Access•Maren Jeleff, Christian Haddad et al.•ARTICLE•SSM - Qualitative Research in…•2023

Mitigating antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global imperative. Part of this effort is the translation of the Global Action Plan into National Action Plans on AMR (NAPs-AMR). However, effective implementation of these plans remains a governance challenge worldwide. This study aims to explore the apparent implementation gap as a governance problem in Austria by examining the situated perspectives of key experts and stakeholders involved in AMR-r…

  • Democratic research: Setting up a research commons for a qualitative, comparative, longitudinal interview study during the Covid-19 pandemic

    Open Access•Bettina M Zimmermann, Bettina Zimmermann et al.•ARTICLE•SSM - Qualitative Research in…•2022

The sudden and dramatic advent of the COVID-19 pandemic led to urgent demands for timely, relevant, yet rigorous research. This paper discusses the origin, design, and execution of the SolPan research commons, a large-scale, international, comparative, qualitative research project that sought to respond to the need for knowledge among researchers and policymakers in times of crisis. The form of organization as a research commons is characterized …

  • Imagined inclusions into a ‘green modernisation’: Local politics and global visions of Morocco’s renewable energy transition

    Open Access•Christian Haddad, Cengiz Günay et al.•ARTICLE•Third World Quarterly•2022•Cited by: 2•References: 62

Energy transitions in the Global South are typically said to sit somewhere between autocratic mega-projects with considerable fallout for local communities on the one hand, and promissory projects to foster a better, sustainable and more inclusive future on the other. Morocco’s ambitious energy strategy entails the construction of 20 concentrated solar power (CSP) plants across the country and aims to provide energy security and position Morocco …

  • The emergence of the global fintech market: Economic and technological determinants

    Open Access•Christian Haddad, Lars Hornuf•ARTICLE•Small Business Economics•2019

We investigate the economic and technological determinants inducing entrepreneurs to establish ventures with the purpose of reinventing financial technology (fintech). We find that countries witness more fintech startup formations when the economy is well-developed and venture capital is readily available. Furthermore, the number of secure Internet servers, mobile telephone subscriptions, and the available labor force has a positive impact on the…

  • Beyond evidence versus truthiness: Toward a symmetrical approach to knowledge and ignorance in policy studies

    Open Access•K Tawny Paul, Christian Haddad•ARTICLE•Policy Sciences•2019•Cited by: 17•References: 21

Current political developments in established liberal democracies in both Europe and North America have fundamentally called into question the normative relations between truth, knowledge and politics. Whether labeled "posttruth" or truthiness, commentators lament the willful spread and deployment of nonknowledge and ignorance as important political forces. In this paper, we discuss ignorance in its strategic dimension by weaving together insight…

  • Embodied values: Post-Pharmaceutical Health and the Accumulation of Surplus Vitality in Regenerative Stem Cell Medicine

    Open Access•Christian Haddad•ARTICLE•Sociologias•2019•Cited by: 2•References: 22

This paper analyzes an emerging form of post-pharmaceutical health and its underlying regime of value in the global bioeconomy of regenerative stem cell-based medicine (RSCM). Animated by a vision to overcome drug-based therapies and their underlying political economies, RSCM pursues a form of regenerative health that is strikingly at odds with pharmaceutical regimes of drug research, regulation and therapy. To offer a theoretical account of thes…

  • Services in the self: Embodied labor and the global bioeconomy

    Open Access•Christian Haddad•ARTICLE•Life Sciences Society and Policy•2015

This review article discusses Melinda Cooper and Catherine Waldby’s recent book, Clinical Labor. Tissue donors and research subjects in the global bio-economy (Duke, 2014), as a topical contribution to the literatures on the bio-economy, and to studies of life sciences, society, and policy more generally. The article contextualizes the book within existing literatures (1) and thoroughly considers its conceptual approach as well as its findings (2…
