  • Debt, time, creation: An introduction

    Open Access•Nathalie Karagiannis•ARTICLE•Social Science Information•2019•References: 6

This special issue explores the concept of debt and its ramifications in contemporary landscapes with the intention of altering the themes and terms of a debate imposed by economistic discourse. Briefly going through the crucial issues raised by the social practice of debt: time and creation - unveils that the languages of contemporary archaeology (Plantzos), sociology (Bissonnette), anthropology (Krige), art history (Hadjinicolaou), literary the…

  • ‘In the Name of Politics’: Sovereignty, Democracy and the Multitude in India

Dipesh Chakrabarty, Nathalie Karagiannis et al.•CHAPTER•Varieties of World-Making•2014

This chapter examines the shift in the understanding of what constitutes the political bond with India's transition from colonial sovereignty to national, democratic sovereignty. It traces the different forms of politics that were considered legitimate in different eras, and the inclination of colonial sovereignty towards domination. Domination was resisted through legitimate ‘disorder’ or lawbreaking — in contrast with the early post–independenc…

  • Multiple Modernities or Global Interconnections: Understanding the Global Post the Colonial

    G K Bhambra, Nathalie Karagiannis et al.•CHAPTER•Varieties of World-Making•2014

This chapter reviews the debate on multiple modernities in the light of the assumption that such varieties emerge in territorial forms. There is a double risk in this debate: first, by focusing on such territorially circumscribed plurality and often assuming for these forms a certain degree of historical constancy, the debate could lead to culturalism in a new guise. Second, by distinguishing the common features of such world–making projects as ‘…

  • Imagination and Tragic Democracy

    Nathalie Karagiannis, Peter Wagner•ARTICLE•Critical Horizons•2012•Cited by: 1•References: 4

Cornelius Castoriadis is one of the very few social and political philosophers - modern and ancient - for whom a concept of imagination is truly central. In his work, however, the role of imagination is so overarching that it becomes difficult to grasp its workings and consequences in detail, in particular in its relation to democracy as the political form in which autonomy is the core imaginary signification. This article will proceed by first s…

  • What is to be thought? What is to be done: The polyscopic thought of Kostas Axelos and Cornelius Castoriadis

Open Access•Nathalie Karagiannis, Peter Wagner•ARTICLE•European Journal of Social Theory•2012•References: 2

Kostas Axelos and Cornelius Castoriadis are among the most inspiring thinkers of the second half of the 20th century. They each combine comprehensive philosophy with social and political theory, and a broad view on human history with a critical diagnosis of the present, with nuanced observations on our current condition-characteristics, rare during this period, that this article describes as polyscopic thought. Castoriadis is widely known as the …

  • Democracy as a Tragic Regime: Democracy and its Cancellation

    Nathalie Karagiannis•ARTICLE•Critical Horizons•2010•Cited by: 3•References: 4

To see "democracy as a tragic regime", as Cornelius Castoriadis did, is to recognize the ever-present risk of democracy's cancellation, but it also means to emphasize the anti-democratic nature of such cancellation, thus its incompatibility with democracy. In the context of this understanding of democracy, the article takes the political to consist of those relations among people and among institutions within the polis, which aim at deciding the …

  • Varieties of Agonism: Conflict, the Common Good, and the Need for Synagonism

Open Access•Nathalie Karagiannis, Peter Wagner•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Philosophy•2008

  • Varieties of World-Making: Beyond Globalization

    Nathalie Karagiannis, Peter Wagner•BOOK•VARIETIES OF WORLD-MAKING: BEYOND…•2007

Globalization has been the topic of heated debate in recent years, with one side asserting that it will produce a better standard of living for people around the world, and a fierce opposition arguing that it will ultimately lead to greater poverty and the destruction of unique human cultures. This book tackles the issue from a different angle, proposing that the contemporary global network of business, politics, and culture be viewed from the in…

  • Solidarity Within Europe/Solidarity Without Europe

    Open Access•Nathalie Karagiannis•ARTICLE•European Societies•2007•Cited by: 2•References: 4

Both in EU policy discourse and in theoretical interventions on Europe, a dilemma was constructed, which has remained implicit. The dilemma in question concerns on the one hand, European solidarity, that is, solidarity within Europe and, on the other hand, solidarity of Europe with ‘the rest of the world’. It is posed in the usual either/or form: either Europe creates and strengthens its social solidarity (its society) or it creates and strengthe…

  • The Tragic and the Political: A Parallel Reading of Kostas Papaioannou and Cornelius Castoriadis

    Nathalie Karagiannis•ARTICLE•Critical Horizons•2006•Cited by: 2

The fundamental difference between Castoriadis' and Papaioannou's accounts of the link between tragedy and the political is that Castoriadis insists on a political form (the democratic regime) whilst Papaioannou insists on a social actor (the masses). The starting point for this essay, then, are two thinkers: one whose main interest was a political and philosophical reflection on the social-historical and one whose main interest was a philosophic…
