Robert Baker, The Structure of Moral Revolutions
Making the Nēnē Matter
In 1950, a group of scientists and public figures, based in Hawaii and England, launched a transnational "restoration project" to save the nēnē or Hawaiian goose from extinction. Scrutinizing this project highlights how endangered species were valued as part of a historically contingent process that reflected and linked the interests of different groups. People did not undertake the restoration project simply because they realized the nēnē were e…

Quantifying the quiet epidemic
During the late 20 th century numerical rating scales became central to the diagnosis of dementia and helped transform attitudes about its causes and prevalence. Concentrating largely on the development and use of the Blessed Dementia Scale, I argue that rating scales served professional ends during the 1960s and 1970s. They helped old age psychiatrists establish jurisdiction over conditions such as dementia and present their field as a vital com…
Sarah Ferber, Bioethics in Historical Perspective
There can be little doubt that ‘bioethics’ has become an important term and approach in recent decades. In regulatory committees, professional journals and public debates, scholars from a variety of fields now discuss and help regulate issues that used to be the preserve of doctors and scientists. Bioethics first emerged in the United States during the early 1970s, following concerns over human experiments, and against a backdrop of civil rights …

Creating the ‘ethics industry’
Recent decades have seen a shift in the management and discussion of biomedicine. Issues once considered by doctors and scientists are now handled by a diverse array of participants, including philosophers, lawyers, theologians and lay representatives. This new approach, known as 'bioethics', has become the norm in regulatory committees and public debate. In this article, I argue that bioethics emerged as a valued enterprise in Britain during the…

Who Guards the Guardians? Ian Kennedy, Bioethics and the 'Ideology of Accountability' in British Medicine
This article charts the history of bioethics in Britain through the work of the academic lawyer Ian Kennedy. From the late 1970s, Kennedy claimed that external oversight, which he termed 'bioethics', was needed to make medicine accountable to patients and the public. I believe these arguments provide a window onto the historical factors that generated the demand for bioethics, and help us determine why it became influential in recent decades. I d…

Making way for molecular biology
The Early History of Tissue Culture in Britain
The technique of tissue culture has, throughout the twentieth century, become a mainstay of biomedical research, and exists today as a celebrated scientific tool. However, an examination of its early history demonstrates that it was once contested, with professional opinion differing as to its value to science and medicine, and, crucially for the purposes of this article, considerable public awareness of its potential and perceived pitfalls. Here…
Leominster Old Priory
This report presents the results of excavations and building recording undertaken in 1979 and 1980 at the Old Priory, Leominster, Hereford and Worcester. This is one of the three remaining buildings of the Benedictine priory at Leominster, a dependent cell of Reading Abbey, the others being a gatehouse chapel, and parts of the priory church. The nave and north aisle of the priory church are now incorporated into the parish church. Observations in…
