Narratives and factual evidence: Two cases of missing children in Israel and Canada
In this article, we discuss two cases of the disappearance of children in Israel and Canada that are haunting both societies. We focus on the clash between social groups and institutions in both societies pursuing disparate narratives, each claiming to hold the truth. The first case concerns the disappearance of Yemenite children who during the mass immigration to Israel following its independence in 1948 were announced dead after being hospitali…
The art of listening: A soldier’s life writing in the Jewish Legions
In this article I uncover formerly undisclosed ego-documents by Baruch Gurevitz, a young soldier who served in the Jewish Legions formed in the British army in the First World War. Gurevitz recorded in his notebook conversations with Jewish legionnaires from different countries and varied backgrounds. These documents reveal how crucial the tales of individuals are for an understanding of the sources of Jewish nationalism shown here to relate to t…
Reluctant nationalists: The life writing of two soldiers in WWI Middle East
An analysis of the diary of Ihsan Turjman, an Arab soldier who served in the Ottoman army in World War I, and of letters written by B. Zilberman, a Jewish soldier in the British army fighting the Ottomans, reveals common themes that nuance the widely held assumption about the inevitability of the Arab-Jewish conflict in the Middle East
Ben-Gurion’s messianic ideas and American Jewry
On 23 August 1950, Israel’s Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion and Jacob Blaustein, President of the American Jewish Committee, expressed their mutual understanding about the relationship of Israel to Jews in the United States and other free countries. Ben-Gurion’s declaration in the exchange that Jews of the United States owe no political allegiance to Israel was naturally seen as a compromise made for pragmatic reasons by the Prime Minister, known…

Brandeis UP, 2016, 213 pp. ISBN 978-1611688801, $40.00. To those of us interested in the lives of others, Hebrew autobiographies, whether written before or after the establishment of the State of Israel, have often been disappointing because so many of these texts have been rooted, a…

Political Escapism in Contemporary Israel: Lessons From David Grossman's to the End of the Land
This article discusses escapist tendencies identified in contemporary Israel and, based on David Grossman's 2010 Grossman, David. 2010. To the End of the Land. Translated by Jessica Cohen. Toronto: McClelland & Stewart. [Google Scholar] novel To the End of the Land (published in Hebrew in 2008), raises the question of whether these tendencies may be associated with the construction of a new narrative for Israeli society
No, Prime Minister: Public Intellectuals and Power in Israel
While intellectuals engaged in public advocacy long before the term 'public intellectual' was coined, it was largely Emile Zola's cry 'J'accuse' during the Dreyfus Affair in late nineteenth-century France that gave rise to the expectation that intellectuals 'speak truth to power'. Yet, while many twentieth- and twenty-first-century intellectuals have spoken to power either as critics or as fellow travellers', their public engagement has always be…
The dynamics of syntax acquisition: Facilitation between syntactic structures
This paper sets out to show how facilitation between different clause structures operates over time in syntax acquisition. The phenomenon of facilitation within given structures has been widely documented, yet inter-structure facilitation has rarely been reported so far. Our findings are based on the naturalistic production corpora of six toddlers learning Hebrew as their first language. We use regression analysis, a method that has not been used…
Blogging and Mass Politics
In an attempt to understand the political implications of online life writing, or blogging, I construct a typology of modes of expression by politically engaged bloggers who are conceptualized as public intellectuals. I then propose the hypothesis that once the public dialogue in society is held almost exclusively online, it can be expected to follow more closely modes of expression associated with mass politics than with Aristotle's rules of civ…
A Canadian Alternative to the "Clash of Civilizations"
This article shows how Yann Martel's novel Life of Pi, following a well-established Canadian tradition of breaching cultural divides, provides an alternative to the "clash of civilizations" theory prevalent in today's international arena. It argues that the novel challenges three foundations of the theory—the consideration of religious revival in contradiction to scientific rationality, the tying of civilization to the negation of other civilizat…

Fiction and the Study of Slums: Anosh Irani's The Cripple and His Talismans
In this article, I deal with the difficulty of applying conventional methods to the study of slums, the poverty-stricken quarters of the world's big cities. I show the difficulty of United Nations (UN) reports, urban studies, and journalistic accounts to grasp the poverty, crime, drug culture, alternative economy, alternative medicine, and political corruption prevailing in slums and analyze Anosh Irani's novel The Cripple and His Talismans as a …
The Jewish Legions in the First World War as a Locus of Identity Formation
Based on life-writing material, this article sheds light on the process by which the Jewish Legions in the British Army in the First World War, composed in large part of Jewish volunteers from Canada and the United States, contributed to the development among its legionnaires of a sense of belonging to their respective North American countries. The notion that formerly displaced immigrants were fighting for the Promised Land, and the consistency o…
The Original Position in José Saramago's Blindness
Following the tradition of social contract theories of the early modern age, John Rawls, in A Theory of Justice , renewed the notion of the “original position,” that is, a set of behavioral assumptions from which general principles of justice are deduced. José Saramago's novel Blindness enriches Rawls's normative theory by adding behavioral assumptions that help clarify some of the problems raised by the theory's critics and enhance its applicati…

Blogging and the Politics of Melancholy
Blogging, the publication of on-line diaries with links to other Web sites, is a recent activity and yet is already producing its celebrities. The author analyzes diary entries posted over five years by one master blogger, and his relations with his readers, to try to originate preliminary hypotheses on the politics of blogging. Observation of blogging in one of its most glamorous manifestations suggests that the new emancipation achieved by self…
National Icons and Personal Identities in Three Israeli Autobiographies
This analysis of autobiographies by three Israeli military and political leaders--Yigal Allon, Moshe Dayan, and Yitzhak Rabin--explores how the three men's status as national icons affected their life writing, and how the different ways in which they negotiated a compromise between the iconicity attributed to them in their youth and their identities as mature human beings affected some of their political attitudes, especially toward Arab-Israeli …

Political Obligation and Military Service in Three Countries
Although questions of political obligation have been much discussed by scholars, little attention has been paid to moral reasons advanced by actual states to justify the compliance of their subjects. We examine the `self-image of the state' through Supreme Court decisions in the USA, Germany, and Israel. Because moral reasons are expressed especially clearly in cases regarding obligations to provide military service, we focus on these. In spite o…

Biography and Historiography: The Case of David Ben-Gurion
As is well known, David Ben-Gurion had an enormous impact on the history of modern Israel. Rarely have one person's thoughts, decisions, and actions had such an effect, for not only is the writing of Israeli history dominated by the towering figure of Ben-Gurion, but that history--in fact, the history of the entire Jewish people in the modern era--often takes the form of life-writing by or about Ben-Gurion. Moses as a Visionary Realist
The biblical figure of Moses is discussed as the "ideal type" of the "visionary realist" defined as a leader who combines the setting of transformational goals with a good sense of reality. Three questions are addressed: (1) Who is the visionary realist? (2) What is the nature of his vision? and (3) What are the strategies of its implementation in transformational processes? The answers to these questions are offered as the building blocks of a p…

An analysis of David Ben-Gurion's correspondence with a leading scientist over the nature of knowledge brings to light an underlying philosophical conflict between them. It is then demonstrated how competing views over the nature ofknowledge significantly constrained Ben-Gurion's communication with scientists in the policy-making process

Trials of Transition: Economic Reform in the Former Communist Bloc
Since the centralist regimes of Communist Europe collapsed, their new governments have been searching for ways to make the transition to decentralized market economies. In this volume, leading economists, from both East and West, explore and map the differing paths taken by individual countries, including the (former) Soviet Union, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, and the now defunct GDR. Although the contributors agree the road to transformation…
