  • “It’s Remarkably White”

Jay Tang, Aki M Gormezano et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Sex Research•2026

Research on diversity within group sex communities in Canada tends to focus on gender, sexuality, and body size as indicators of inclusion and acceptance. Racial/ethnic diversity are notably absent from these discussions; in this study, we explored perceptions and experiences of race and racism in group sex spaces. We conducted two annual individual interviews with group sex participants living in southwestern Canada. Of our 20 participants, 40% …

  • Assessing Patterns of Tourism Seasonality in a Mixed Heritage Island Site

    Open Access•Leah Shumka, Laura Shumka•ARTICLE•Journal of Environmental…•2024

The main purpose of the paper is to make a ground investigation on island integrity and factors that are threatening conservation status. The island itself is part of a protected area i.e. National Park Prespa proclaimed in 1999 in Albania, while it holds other important designations as Ramsar site, and Biosphere Reserve. This approach looks primarily on particular impacts caused by tourism seasonality due to climate and geographic location of an…

Open Access•Leah Shumka, Laura Shumka et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Environmental…•2020

Monitoring and dealing with particular conditions related to relative humidity (RH) and temperature within different cultural objects including post-byzantine churches are of primary importance for the current conservation and advancement. Following the parti…

  • The “Sociological Equation”

Susan Strega, Leah Shumka et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Sex Research•2020•Cited by: 2•References: 15

Street sex work is deeply stratified, embedded in power imbalances and inequities; workers are multiply marginalized, relative to customers, in terms of race, class and gender. At the same time, these imbalances should not be equated with worker powerlessness. In this paper, we seek to counter the existing limited and polarized conceptualizations of agency that dominate the sex work literature by providing an assessment of the ways in which femal…

  • Pleasure, risk perception and consent among group sex party attendees in a small Canadian Urban Centre

    K Fulcher, Leah Shumka et al.•ARTICLE•Culture Health & Sexuality•2019

From a health perspective, group sex parties represent risk environments, as multiple sexual partners and polysubstance use associated with these parties may present risk practices for sexually transmitted infection (STI) transmission. At the same time, group sex parties exemplify sex as recreation, expressed in contemporary sociological theory as sex as leisure or play. In this paper, we report on the findings of an exploratory qualitative study…

  • Sex workers as peer health advocates

Open Access•Cecilia Benoit, Lynne Belle‐isle et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal for Equity…•2017

The peer education program proved successful in enhancing sex workers' community empowerment in one urban setting by increasing their knowledge about health issues, sharing information about and building confidence in accessing services, and expanding capacity to disseminate this knowledge to others. This 'proof of concept' built the foundation for a long-term initiative in this setting and has promise for other jurisdictions wishing to adapt sim…

  • I Wanted to Feel Like a Man Again”

    Open Access•Leah Shumka, Susan Strega et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Sociology•2017•Cited by: 6•References: 14

This paper examines the narratives of men who purchase sex from street level providers in a mid-sized city in Western Canada. We explore what men’s stories tell us about how masculinity is constructed in relation to street sex work. These men narrated their purchase of sex as attempts to exercise or lay claim to male power, privilege, and authority; at the same time, research reveals how tenuous this arrangement is for men. Study participants dre…

  • Explaining the Health Gap Experienced by Girls and Women in Canada

    Open Access•Cecilia Benoit, Leah Shumka et al.•ARTICLE•Sociological Research Online•2009•Cited by: 6•References: 52

In the last few decades there has been a resurgence of interest in the social causes of health inequities among and between individuals and populations. This 'social determinants' perspective focuses on the myriad demographic and societal factors that shape health and well-being. Heeding calls for the mainstreaming of two very specific health determinants - sex and gender - we incorporate both into our analysis of the health gap experienced by gi…
