Does Increased Choice over Learning Topic Improve the Effectiveness of Automated Feedback for Educators
Educator agency in the form of choice over learning experiences is widely thought to enhance educator engagement and instructional improvement, yet causal evidence is scarce. We conducted a preregistered randomized controlled trial in an online computer science course with volunteer instructors who teach students worldwide. All instructors (N = 583) received automated feedback on their instruction, with half randomly assigned to have choice over …
Measuring returns to experience using supervisor ratings of observed performance
We study the returns to experience in teaching, estimated using supervisor ratings from classroom observations. We describe the assumptions required to interpret changes in observation ratings over time as the causal effect of experience on performance. We compare two difference‐in‐differences strategies: the two‐way fixed effects estimator common in the literature, and an alternative which avoids potential bias arising from effect heterogeneity.…

Hope Springs
To better understand the moderating effect of coping mechanisms (distraction and rumination) and internal assets (hope) on the relationship between perceived discrimination and depressive symptoms, a sample of 363 African American students (65.3% female; mean age = 20.25 years; SD = 2.39) from two large Midwestern universities were surveyed using self-report measures. Hierarchical multiple regressions were used to explore the relationships among …

Treatment of Atopic Dermatitis and Psoriasis Vulgaris With Bupropion-SR
Objective To determine whether the antidepressant bupropion may be useful in treating atopic dermatitis and psoriasis in nondepressed patients. Method Ten nondepressed subjects with atopic dermatitis and 10 with psoriasis completed a single-track, open-label treatment protocol with bupropion-SR in doses of 150 mg/day and 300 mg/day, administered sequentially for 3 weeks each, followed by a 3-week wash-out. Vaughan Williams and the English Tradition
It is curious how the leadership of the musical world has passed from one country to another. This is not always merely the result of fashion or of social causes: it really does appear that the muses are migratory. The commanding influence exerted by any country at one time has tended to swamp or, to change the metaphor, at least obscure the native art of others. One has only to think of the tremendous impact of Italian, and later of German, musi…

Elgar's 'Dream of Gerontius' Aet.50
Fifty years have passed since Elgar's setting of Cardinal Newman's poem 'The Dream of Gerontius' was first performed at the Birmingham Festival. This great music now holds an established place in the general repertoire of choral societies: indeed, so secure is its present position that it is easy to forget how chequered has been its career in the half century, to what accidents it has been a prey, under what misunderstandings it has suffered-and …
