  • “ There Was a Light Bulb Moment ”

    Open Access•Amanda Dominello, S Lu et al.•ARTICLE•Health Expectations•2026

INTRODUCTION: Co-design of health services is an increasingly used method to meaningfully enable patient and public involvement, especially when working with priority populations whose perspectives are often overlooked in traditional top-down approaches. However, differences in power and influence among stakeholders can lead to asymmetry and the marginalisation of certain voices. We used persona dyads (patient and provider) to co-design improveme…

  • The Supporter Needs Supporting Too

    Open Access•Debbie Smith, Debbie M Smith et al.•ARTICLE•Health Expectations•2025

BACKGROUND: Birthing mothers are likely to experience high levels of psychological distress in a pregnancy following a perinatal death. However, less is known about the impact of a subsequent pregnancy after perinatal death on partners and their experiences of maternity care. OBJECTIVE: To explore partners' maternity care experiences and support needs in a pregnancy following a perinatal death. DESIGN: Qualitative descriptive design. SETTING AND …

  • Assessing Readiness for Change

Open Access•Helen Mulcahy, Elaine Lehane et al.•ARTICLE•Maternal and Child Nutrition•2025

Breastfeeding is a critical component of maternal and child health, but breastfeeding rates vary widely, with Ireland's rates lowest in Europe. This paper, the first stage of the Practice Enhancement for Exclusive Breastfeeding (PEEB) study, describes the methodology and key findings from a multi-component baseline situational analysis of breastfeeding support conducted in acute and community healthcare settings in Ireland. Guided by the Promotin…

  • Non-Participant Observations in Experience-Based Codesign

Open Access•Colleen Cheek, Elizabeth Austin et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2024•References: 28

Previous reviews of experience-based codesign (EBCD) projects have shown non-participant observations (NPOs) are omitted or unreported in the majority of studies, despite academics' insistence of their value. We undertook Stage 1 of an EBCD project using a Case Study Research approach to organise the inquiry. NPOs were used as the first object (frame of analysis) of the case subject, exploring and understanding the experience of users and provide…

  • Food security and insecurity in medieval Irish towns

James A Galloway, Margaret Murphy•ARTICLE•Journal of Medieval History•2023•Cited by: 2

The degree to which the townspeople of medieval Ireland enjoyed food security or experienced food insecurity forms the subject of this paper. Having outlined the context within which Irish medieval towns started to experience food insecurity, the paper then proceeds to examine responses to this situation. These include protection of the urban area, strategies for improved storage and transport of foodstuffs, the production of food within and imme…

  • The Political Domain Goes to Twitter

Open Access•G R Boynton, James Cook et al.•ARTICLE•Open Journal of Political Science•2014•Cited by: 2

The argument is twofold. One, the character of political communication on Twitter is sufficiently different from the general character of the Twitter stream, from the "firehose", as it is known that political communication should be considered as a separable domain of communication. Specifically, retweets, urls, and hashtags are used far more frequently in political communication than is true for the full stream of messages and that reflects comm…

  • Politeness in Intercultural Email Communication

Open Access•M Lynne Murphy, Margaret Murphy et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Intercultural…•2006•Cited by: 4•References: 5

This paper presents initial results from analysis of data collected on the topic of politeness in intercultural email communication from a large cohort of Australian academic and general staff at an established metropolitan university. We were interested in the language used by these staff members while they conducted their initial email communication with their contacts overseas. The contacts overseas were, for example, fellow professional colle…

  • The Struggle to Breathe

J Daniel Schubert, M Lynne Murphy et al.•ARTICLE•The Oral History Review•2005

The first sizeable cohort of people living with cystic fibrosis (CF) has now reached adulthood. Gradual improvements in the diagnosis and treatment of the disease have increased life expectancy to approximately 32 years. Members of this cohort have lived all their lives near, at, or slightly beyond life expectancy. The authors tell the story of Lori Morris-Hughes, a 36-year old who balances the demands of work and family life with life-long termi…

  • The High Cost of Dying

    Open Access•Margaret Murphy•ARTICLE•Studies in Church History•1987

This examination of the bequests made by medieval Dubliners for the health of their souls is based almost exclusively on evidence drawn from wills of the period. The medieval ecclesiastical sources of Dublin are by no means abundant, and wills in particular have survived badly. Only one register of wills remains, covering the period 1457 to 1483 and containing seventy-four testaments. To this may be added a further twenty-four wills, found in a v…

  • Teaching economics to the gifted

    Margaret Murphy, Margaret M Murphy•ARTICLE•Theory Into Practice•1987

Meeting the educational needs of the gifted and talented is an issue receiving widespread attention in today's schools. The problems embedded in this thorny issue are many, with the first being the matter of correctly identifying who is considered to fall into this classification. The earliest sorting system used a simple IQ score to measure giftedness, with an arbitrarily selected cutoff level, such as the top 5 percent. As early as 1975, additi…

  • Social Consequences of Vesico-Vaginal Fistula in Northern Nigeria

    Open Access•Margaret Murphy•ARTICLE•Journal of Biosocial Science•1981

The social consequences to the patient who suffers from vesico-vaginal fistula are discussed. Patients are mainly young, come from subsistence farming backgrounds, are often considered to have brought shame on their families, and frequently lose their husband's support, especially if their condition is of long standing. In a society that places a high value on childbearing they have little hope for the future.
