  • Neurocomputational Models of Language Processing

John Hale, Luca Campanelli et al.•ARTICLE•Annual Review of Linguistics•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 7

Efforts to understand the brain bases of language face the Mapping Problem: At what level do linguistic computations and representations connect to human neurobiology? We review one approach to this problem that relies on rigorously defined computational models to specify the links between linguistic features and neural signals. Such tools can be used to estimate linguistic predictions, model linguistic features, and specify a sequence of process…

  • Information-theoretical Complexity Metrics

    Open Access•John Hale•ARTICLE•Language and Linguistics Compass•2016•Cited by: 8•References: 48

Information-theoretical complexity metrics are auxiliary hypotheses that link theories of parsing and grammar to potentially observable measurements such as reading times and neural signals. This review article considers two such metrics, Surprisal and Entropy Reduction, which are respectively built upon the two most natural notions of 'information value' for an observed event (Blachman ). This review sketches their conceptual background and touc…

  • Uncertainty in processing relative clauses across East Asian languages

Open Access•Jiwon Yun, Ji‐won Yun et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of East Asian Linguistics•2015

The processing difficulty profile for relative clauses in Chinese, Japanese and Korean represents a challenge for theories of human parsing. We address this challenge using a grammar-based complexity metric, one that reflects a minimalist analysis of relative clauses for all three languages as well as structure-dependent corpus distributions. Together, these define a comprehender’s degree of uncertainty at each point in a sentence. We use this id…

  • The Acceptability Cline in VP Ellipsis

    Open Access•Christina S Kim, Gregory M Kobele et al.•ARTICLE•Syntax•2011•Cited by: 9•References: 50

This paper lays the foundations for a processing model of relative acceptability levels in verb phrase ellipsis (VPE). In the proposed model, mismatching VPE examples are grammatical but less acceptable because they violate heuristic parsing strategies. This analysis is presented in a Minimalist Grammar formalism that is compatible with standard parsing techniques. The overall proposal integrates computational assumptions about parsing with a psy…

  • Uncertainty About the Rest of the Sentence

    Open Access•John Hale•ARTICLE•Cognitive Science•2006•Cited by: 20•References: 7

A word-by-word human sentence processing complexity metric is presented. This metric formalizes the intuition that comprehenders have more trouble on words contributing larger amounts of information about the syntactic structure of the sentence as a whole. The formalization is in terms of the conditional entropy of grammatical continuations, given the words that have been heard so far. To calculate the predictions of this metric, Wilson and Carro…

  • A probabilistic earley parser as a psycholinguistic model

John Hale•CONFERENCE•Second meeting of the North…•2001

In human sentence processing, cognitive load can be defined many ways. This report considers a definition of cognitive load in terms of the total probability of structural options that have been disconfirmed at some point in a sentence: the surprisal of word wi given its prefix wo...i-1 on a phrase-structural language model. These loads can be efficiently calculated using a probabilistic Earley parser (Stolcke, 1995) which is interpreted as gener…

  • The Civilization of Europe in the Renaissance

Monty Armstrong, John Hale et al.•ARTICLE•The History Teacher•1995

Looks at European history between 1450 and 1620, describes the intellectual life and social conditions of the period, and discusses the cultural changes that took place.

  • The Arrival of the Resident Diplomat

    Open Access•John Hale•ARTICLE•Blackfriars•1955

So much of what was once held to have been 're-born' about the year 1450 has since been shown to have been lustily alive in earlier generations that as a result historians are reluctant to attribute any notable changes at all to the period of the Renaissance. It is useful to be reminded by Professor Mattingly of an institution-permanent diplomatic representation-that began and rose to something like its full height between the years 1450 and 1550…
