Commemoration with Contradictions – the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, Grave Concentration and the ‘Tanzania Exercise’, 1968–1975
This article examines how colonial-era policies continued to shape the Commonwealth War Graves Commission’s post-colonial work in Tanzania. Tracing the gap between the Commission’s principle of ‘equality in death’ and its practice in East Africa, it shows how racialised policies left tens of thousands of Africans unnamed or absent from commemoration. Confronted after independence with redevelopment, fragile tenure and failing maintenance, the Com…
Deaths and Statistics. Discovering the Dead of the East Africa Campaign of the First World War
This article reassesses mortality in the First World War East Africa Campaign by foregrounding newly recovered cause of death evidence for African soldiers and labourers, many of whom were historically omitted from named commemoration. It situates these findings within the commemorative and administrative frameworks of the Imperial/Commonwealth War Graves Commission and the recent CWGC Non-Commemoration Programme. Drawing on dispersed death lists…
Harmonizing business practices of events and convention industry through sustainability assessment framework development
The global event and convention industry is singlehandedly one of the largest and most lucrative sectors in business forecasting market size projected at approximately more than two trillion U.S. dollars by 2028. Despite being a significant contributor to global economic growth, the event and convention industry faces a pressing environmental challenge due to its substantial carbon footprint. Current practices in the industry inadequately address…
Britain and the Cyprus Crisis of 1974
This book examines the ideological and socio-political discourses shaping the remembrance and representation of Britain and the Cyprus conflict of 1974 within Greek Cypriot society. By combining the official with the popular and drawing on an extensive range of oral history interviews, this monograph shows that a suspicion born out of Britain’s long (neo-)colonial connection to Cyprus has come to frame the image and understanding of British actio…

Samuel Johnson and the Sense of History
Clinical Application of the Children's Action Tendency Scale
The clinical usefulness of a previously validated self-report measure of children's assertiveness was examined for two white school-age samples ( ns = 18 and 17; 6 to 14 yr. old) referred for training in group social skills. Subscale scores of a clinical sample supported the norms of the validation samples but the relationship of these scores to parental and self-report measures of self-esteem appeared equivocal. Use with a hyperkinetic sample sh…

Use of Burks' Behavior Rating Scale with a Referred Population
The behavior of 106 children referred for social skills training was assessed by parental ratings. The resulting local norms supported the clinical sensitivity of Burks' scale. Independent therapists' and parents' ratings of a sub-sample produced inadequate inter-rater reliability

Edward Martyn
George Moore said of Edward Martyn:'There is nobody like him. He is more wonderful than anything in literature.' This inspired thought becomes vivid in Denis Gwynn's story of Edward Martyn's life. The memoir is compiled from extracts, chaotic in their confusion as they were left, from Edward Miartyn's own writings. The result, however, despite the incompleteness of these papers, is the most enlightening story of the state of Ireland in a period w…
