  • Remote sensing and citizen science for habitat mapping: A machine learning approach to lowland heathland in Surrey, UK

Open Access•Victoria Webster, Ana Andries et al.•ARTICLE•People and Nature•2026

In a time of extensive global biodiversity loss, conservation efforts increasingly rely on high‐resolution, accurate, up‐to‐date habitat maps to guide decision‐making and strategic interventions. Many products have been developed in response, using machine learning (ML) methods to automate habitat classification, often relying on satellite imagery due to the limited availability of ecological survey data at a landscape scale. To ensure that these…

  • Recycling plastics from e‐waste: Implications for effective eco‐design

Open Access•Ceri Fenwick, Kieren Mayers et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Industrial Ecology•2023

This paper presents five case studies on waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) recycling to provide a coherent overview on the likely impact of eco‐design measures on recycling of plastics used in energy‐related products within the EU. Whilst some eco‐design measures, such as improving disassembly of plastic parts, may generally benefit recycling operations, other measures were found to be ineffective or requiring further investigation…

  • Matching in the Dark? Inequalities in Student to Degree Match

Stuart Campbell, Lindsey Macmillan et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Labor Economics•2022

This paper examines inequalities in the match between student and degree quality using linked administrative data from schools, universities, and tax authorities. We analyze two measures of match at the university subject level: undergraduate enrollment qualifications and graduate earnings. We find for both that disadvantaged students match to lower-quality degrees across the entire distribution of achievement in a setting with uniform fees and a…

  • Drivers of historical and projected changes in diverse boreal ecosystems: Fires, thermokarst, riverine dynamics, and humans

    Open Access•M Torre Jorgenson, Dana R N Brown et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2022

Alaska has diverse boreal ecosystems across heterogeneous landscapes driven by a wide range of biological and geomorphic processes associated with disturbance and successional patterns under a changing climate. To assess historical patterns and rates of change, we quantified the areal extent of ecotypes and the biophysical factors driving change through photo-interpretation of 2200 points on a time-series (∼1949, ∼1978, ∼2007, ∼2017) of geo-recti…

  • Why Unions Survive: Understanding How Unions Overcome the Free-Rider Problem

    Richard Murphy•ARTICLE•Journal of Labor Economics•2020

This paper provides evidence for why individuals join unions instead of free riding. I model membership as legal insurance. To test the model, I use the incidence of news stories concerning allegations against teachers in the United Kingdom as a plausibly exogenous shock to demand for such insurance. I find that for every five stories occurring in a region, teachers are 2.2 percentage points more likely to be members in the subsequent year. These…

  • Creating a race to the top in global tax governance: The political case for tax spillover assessments

    Andrew Baker, Richard Murphy•ARTICLE•Globalizations•2020•Cited by: 2•References: 23

‘Reglobalization’ requires global governance mechanisms that can promote norm and normative change constitutive of a ‘post-neoliberal order’. Mitigating the race to the bottom in taxation, which can harm public provision and social mobility, is a specific challenge requiring the creation of new tools. This requires going beyond the current reporting tools of global tax governance to focus more systematically on government policies. We develop a p…

  • Modern Monetary Theory and the Changing Role of Tax in Society

    Open Access•Andrew Baker, Richard Murphy•ARTICLE•Social Policy and Society•2020•Cited by: 6•References: 10

Tax is traditionally viewed as the main funding mechanism for government spending. Consequently, social policy is often seen as something determined and constrained by tax revenue. Modern Monetary Theory (‘MMT’) presents a reversal of the tax-spend cycle, by identifying a spend-tax cycle. Using the UK as an example, we highlight that one of MMT’s most important, but under-explored, contributions is its potential to re-frame the role of tax from b…

In 2015, member countries of the United Nations adopted the 17 Sustainable Development Goals at the Sustainable Development Summit in New York. These global goals have 169 targets and 232 indicators that are based on the three pillars of sustainable development: economic, social, and environmental. Substantial challenges remain in obtaining data of the required quality, especially in developing countries, given the often limited resources availab…

  • Paying out and crowding out? The globalization of higher education

Stephen Machin, Richard Murphy•ARTICLE•Journal of Economic Geography•2017•Cited by: 5•References: 7

Increased globalization of higher education has occurred as more students from across the world now enrol in universities abroad for their post-school education. We study the consequences of having more foreign students in one of the world’s biggest receivers of international students, the UK’s higher educational system. To do so, we estimate the impact of growing numbers of international students on the number of domestic students. Using rich ad…

  • The Changing Economic Advantage from Private Schools

Open Access•Francis Green, Stephen Machin et al.•ARTICLE•Economica•2012•Cited by: 13•References: 27

Private schooling is an important feature of education systems across the world. Despite its relatively small size, the British private school sector has a long history and plays a prominent role in society. We provide evidence showing that private schools have been successful in transforming their ability to generate the academic outputs that are most in demand in the modern economy: the private/state school wage differential has risen significa…

Lynn C Miller, Richard Murphy et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•1981•Cited by: 18

A self-report instrument yielded two separate factors: private body consciousness (awareness of internal sensations) and public body consciousness (awareness of observable aspects of body). For each factor, norms, test-retest reliability data, and correlations with other personality measures are presented. An experiment on reaction to ingestion of caffeine revealed that only subjects high in private body consciousness or high in both private body…

From the autumn of 1918 until late in 1919 home rule was dead as a practical issue in British politics, and the government concerned itself with the administration in Ireland and the means by which republican violence might be stamped out. During the spring and summer of 1918 Lloyd George had attempted to follow what he called the ‘dual policy’ — home rule in return for military compulsion — and a cabinet committee, under the chairmanship of Walt…
