Affect and Emotion in a Parent’s Engagement with Statutory Child-Protection Services: Navigating Stigma and ‘Identity Assault’
How might we understand the emotional processes that generate desperate anger and resistance by parents facing child-protection investigations? In this paper, we draw on the sociology of affect and emotion to analyse one parent’s story of a child-protection enquiry, the removal of her son and the subsequent family reunification. Late nineteenth-century England saw the development of a number of campaigns and social movements which were connected by both a hostility towards the medical profession and by the use of discourses of purity and sanitary reform. Paradoxes of Holism: Some Problems in Developing an Antioppressive Medical Practice
Starting from the observation that many unconventional health practices can be characterized as reactions against biomedicine's dualistic logic, this article analyses the claim that 'holistic' medicine tends to be socially and politically progressive. The Symbolizing Body and the Metaphysics of Alternative Medicine
This article addresses the tension between conceptualizations of the objective body, which are central to biomedicine, and conceptualizations of the expressive body. Within a metaphysics which can be an adequate grounding for the practice of alternative medicine, I argue, the natural body must be fully conceptualized as both object and as expressive. I draw on phenomenology and on actor-network theory to outline a new model of `biosocial nature' …
