Development and Psychometric Validation of the Alternative Five Personality Inventory for Adolescents and Control Scales
This study presents the validation of a personality assessment instrument for adolescents based on the five alternative factors and 20 facets proposed in the Zuckerman-Kuhlman-Aluja Personality Questionnaire Short Form (ZKA-PQ/SF). The new instrument, named the Alternative Five Personality Inventory for Adolescents (A5PI-A), was administered to a sample of 1,472 adolescents 12 to 17 years old. Three control scales were developed: Inconsistency (I…
Satisfaction with Telepsychiatry during the Covid-19 pandemic: Patients’ and psychiatrists’ report from a University Hospital
Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has led to important changes in the approach to patients worldwide. Different agencies have proposed and implemented telemedicine-based care services in order to ensure access to health care for all people. Suicides among Children and Adolescents in Paraguay: An 18-year National Exploratory Study (2004–2022)
BACKGROUND: Suicide and suicide attempts are impacting events for patients and their relatives, and these behaviors are still taboo among adults and may be even more traumatic when involving children and adolescents. AIM: In this study we aimed to describe suicide rates among children and adolescents in Paraguay over the last decades as well as associated factors such as sociodemographic characteristics and methods used for suicide. Social Participation Modifies the Effect of a Structured Physical Activity Program on Major Mobility Disability Among Older Adults: Results From the Life Study
Our findings suggest that baseline social participation is an important factor for the success of a PA intervention aimed at delaying mobility disability
Making M&E More ‘Impact-oriented’: Illustrations from the UN
In international development, impact evaluation (IE) is becoming more and more an institutionalised practice. This article starts out by addressing the question of what institutionalisation of IE means and how it could work. Subsequently, the article explores common challenges in monitoring and evaluation functions in the UN system related to the supply of (and to a lesser extent demand for) evidence on impact. Rather than looking for solutions t…
The Profile of Emotional Competence (PEC): Development and Validation of a Self-Reported Measure that Fits Dimensions of Emotional Competence Theory
Emotional Competence (EC), which refers to individual differences in the identification, understanding, expression, regulation and use of one's own emotions and those of others, has been found to be an important predictor of individuals' adaptation to their environment. Higher EC is associated with greater happiness, better mental and physical health, more satisfying social and marital relationships and greater occupational success. While it is w…
Crónicas urbanas
The urban chronicle is probably one of the least cultivated genres in Bolivia, not because the country lacks a repertoire of urban stories, but rather that those stories are neither produced nor consumed as a literary "genre." They are, instead, lived, savored and distributed through circuits of affection by which the city, the country and its inhabitants reveal their daily lives, the clamor forged by their stories of struggle, by their sorrows a…
Exploring the Structure of Zuckerman's Sensation Seeking Scale, Form V in a Spanish Sample
The psychometric properties of the original version of the Sensation Seeking Scale (Form V) were analyzed in a sample of 1,006 Spanish university students. The total sample was randomly split into two halves. Exploratory factor analyses were conducted on the calibration sample (n=504), whereas confirmatory factor analysis procedures were performed on the validation sample (n=502). As previous studies have suggested, exploratory factor structure i…
Crossing the interdisciplinary barrier: A baccalaureate computer science option in bioinformatics
Bioinformatics is a new and rapidly evolving discipline that has emerged from the fields of experimental molecular biology and biochemistry, and from the artificial intelligence, database, pattern recognition, and algorithms disciplines of computer science. Largely because of the inherently interdisciplinary nature of bioinformatics research, academia has been slow to respond to strong industry and government demands for trained scientists to dev…
On teaching AI and expert systems courses
The experiences of faculty members from departments of engineering, mathematics, and computer science throughout the United States and Puerto Rico who came together for three weeks to discuss effective ways to teach artificial intelligence to undergraduates are outlined. The paper describes the rationale for the development of three main topic areas: artificial intelligence, expert systems, and symbolic and logic programming, and it includes syll…
Curricula Development in Computer Science and Engineering
This paper reviews some of the most recent efforts in the development of undergraduate curricula in Computer Science and Engineering. Emphasis is placed on the curricula that have been proposed by the Association for Computing Machinery and the IEEE Computer Society. The relationships between the two sets of recommendations are discussed
