The International Seabed Authority, the Problem of Disregard and the Case for Administrative Accountability
The International Seabed Authority (ISA) is tasked with regulating deep seabed mining (DSM) in areas beyond national jurisdiction for the benefit of all humankind. Unlike most international institutions, the ISA operates as a frontline resource regulator with direct authority over DSM contracts and activities. To effectively carry out its regulatory mandate, the ISA operates under a complex institutional structure involving the delegation of sign…
Archives, Memories, and Masks in Writing the History of the French Resistance
This article uses the writings of the famous resister-turned-historian Daniel Cordier as a prism through which to examine how witnesses and historians have approached the history of the French Resistance since 1945. Cordier, having served as Jean Moulin's secretary in the war, later became his biographer. His neopositivist approach prioritized the use of written archives over memories. Since Cordier himself later wrote his own memoirs, the articl…
Vichy: D'Un Mythe l'Autre
After the Deportation: Memory Battles in Postwar France by Philip Nord
The historical literature about the memory of the Occupation in France is immense. Since Rousso’s pioneering study, the accepted narrative was that for twenty-five years after 1945, the French lived a consoling Gaullist myth that France had been a nation of resisters.1 This myth not only underplayed the role of collaboration, but its focus on the heroes of the resistance marginalized the experiences of the Holocaust victims: Jews who tried to tel…
De Gaulle
In a definitive biography of the mythic general who refused to accept Nazi domination of France, Julian Jackson captures this titanic figure as never before. Drawing on unpublished letters, memoirs, and resources of the recently opened de Gaulle archive, he shows how this volatile visionary put a broken France back at the center of world affairs.
A Divided Republic: Nation, State, and Citizenship in Contemporary France
Emile Chabal's book could not be more timely—especially in the light of the terrible events which have taken place in France since it was written. He quotes at one point the distinguished Franco-Am

Sex, Politics and Morality in France, 1954-1982
This article examines the French homosexual reform movement ‘Arcadie’ (1954-1982). Arcadie was one of the most important of a number of so-called ‘homophile’ movements which developed in several Western countries in the 1950s. After the emergence of radical gay politics in the early 1970s, these movements were violently criticized for their alleged ‘reformism’ and conservatism. This article argues that, while such accusations were not entirely un…

Pulling together previously separate histories of occupation, resistance, and collaboration, he presents a definitive history of the period. The book ranges from the politics of Marshal Petain's regime to the experiences of the ordinary French people, from surrender in 1940 to the purges of liberation. The author resto…

General De Gaulle and his Enemies: Antigaullism in France Since 1940
On the centenary of General de Gaulle's birth in November 1990, hundreds of historians, politicians and statesmen gathered in Paris to discuss his life. Their deliberations were published in seven volumes running to several thousand pages. The participants included former opponents who now declared themselves ‘posthumous Gaullists’ or ‘remorseful’ ones. The whole occasion seemed to fulfil André Malraux's prediction: ‘Everyone is, has been or will…

The Politics of Depression in France 1932–1936
The poor performance of the French economy in the 1930s has long been recognised as a major contributory factor in the decline of the Third Republic, which collapsed after the defeat of 1940. Although France entered the Great Depression later than the rest of the world, French governments failed to learn from the experience of other countries in combating it. This book is the first full study of the formation of economic policy in these crucial y…

The French and Spanish Popular Fronts: Comparative Perspectives
The menace of triumphant Nazism and fascism across Europe in the 1930s drove the left into unity with liberals, in order to make common cause against the extremist right. Popular Front initiatives were a significant attempt to bar the way to further fascist victories. This collection of essays focuses specifically on France and Spain as the only two countries where Popular Front coalitions won political power through the ballot box. From a compar…
