  • The Reformation of the Eyes

    Open Access•Stuart Clark•ARTICLE•Journal of Religious History•2003•Cited by: 3

Apparitions were the subject of fierce theological and philosophical debate in the period after the Reformation. But these controversies also raised issues fundamental to the nature and organization of human vision. They crossed and recrossed the boundaries between religion and the science and psychology of optics. Apparitions, after all, are things that appear, and spectres are things that are seen. Before they could mean anything to anyone they…

  • Languages of Witchcraft

    Open Access•Stuart Clark•BOOK•Languages of Witchcraft•2001

Different conceptions of the world and of reality have made witchcraft possible in some societies and impossible in others. How did the people of early modern Europe experience it and what was its place in their culture? The new essays in this collection illustrate the latest trends in witchcraft research and in cultural history in general. After three decades in which the social analysis of witchcraft accusations has dominated the subject, they …

  • Women and Witchcraft

    Stuart Clark•CHAPTER•Thinking with Demons•1999

This chapter discusses why (from a particular male cultural perspective) witches were conceived to be women. For witches and highly deviant women were culturally constructed and, thus, made intelligible in terms of the same conceptual relations. In consequence, the witch became one of Beidelman's ‘subtle epigrams’ — a powerful symbolic vehicle capable of evoking the negative poles of many other hierarchically paired opposites in a particular clas…

  • The Charisma of Office

    Stuart Clark•CHAPTER•Thinking with Demons•1999

Political sociology's most famous analysis of the grounds on which the exercise of authority might be validly defended was offered by Max Weber. He distinguished three forms of legitimate domination rational, traditional, and charismatic — each resting on quite different credentials. Charismatic authority stemmed from the exceptional qualities of heroism, religiosity, wisdom (or whatever), of specific individuals supremely ‘gifted by grace’. Disd…

He took his B.A. at Magdalene in 1577–8, was ordained at Ely two years later and spent the 1580s preaching and schoolmastering in East Anglia. • Bacon's Henry VII

    Stuart Clark•ARTICLE•History and Theory•1974•Cited by: 1

Both Acton and Collingwood believed that until the later nineteenth century studies were in a position similar to that of the natural sciences before Galileo. In fact, this analogy between a nineteenth-century historical revolution and the seventeenth-century scientific revolution extends beyond the development of the discipline itself to the criteria by which it still tends to judge its own past. Just as physics and astronomy before Galileo and …
