  • Serial characterization as a feminist ethics of care in Better Call Saul

Evan Thomas, Erica Haugtvedt•ARTICLE•The Journal of Popular Television•2023

We pursue the consequences of temporal complexity for character development in Better Call Saul (2015–22). We advance this argument by attempting an Aristotelian reading of Better Call Saul but then show some of the deficits that follow from transferring this methodology from theatrical to serialized televisual character. Following this, we highlight some of the deficits of a judgemental approach to character that appear within the narrative of B…

  • Descartes and his critics on passions and animals

Evan Thomas•ARTICLE•British Journal for the History…•2022

Descartes’ theory of the passions has important connections to his view that nonhuman animals are automata. In this paper, I show how critics of animal automatism exploited these connections. I interpret a criticism of animal automatism developed by Gabriel Daniel (1649–1728). Daniel argues that animal automatism commits Descartes to an implausible account of the phenomenology of conflicts between passion and reason. If animal bodies act by mere …

  • Descartes on the Animal Within, and the Animals Without

    Open Access•Evan Thomas•ARTICLE•Canadian Journal of Philosophy•2020

Descartes held that animals are material automata without minds. However, this raises a puzzle. Descartes’s argument for this doctrine relies on the claims that animals lack language and general intelligence. But these claims seem compatible with the view that animals have minds. As a solution to this puzzle, I defend what I call the introspective-analogical interpretation. According to this interpretation, Descartes employs introspection to show…

  • Comparing Sanitation Delivery Modalities in Urban Informal Settlement Schools

Open Access•Kate Bohnert, Anna N Chard et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2016

The provision of safely managed sanitation in informal settlements is a challenge, especially in schools that require durable, clean, sex-segregated facilities for a large number of children. In informal settlements in Nairobi, school sanitation facilities demand considerable capital costs, yet are prone to breakage and often unhygienic. The private sector may be able to provide quality facilities and services to schools at lower costs as an alte…

  • Process evaluation and assessment of use of a large scale water filter and cookstove program in Rwanda

Open Access•Christina Barstow, Christina K Barstow et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2016

This program suggests that free distribution is not a determinant of low adoption. It is plausible that continued engagement in households, enabled by Ministry of Health support and carbon financed revenue, contributed to high adoption rates. Overall, the program was able to demonstrate a privately financed, public health intervention can achieve high levels of initial adoption and usage of household level water filtration and improved cookstoves…

  • Measuring the Relevance of Evaluation Criteria among Health Information Seekers on the Internet

    Open Access•Michael D Barnes, Michael Barnes et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Health Psychology•2003•Cited by: 3•References: 13

This study identified the criteria that are valued among Internet users when rating and accessing health information on the World Wide Web. Participants ( N = 578) successfully completed a Web-based survey by ranking 12 criteria for evaluating health information. Then, by applying those same evaluation criteria, rated the quality of three preselected health-related websites and indicated their preference for one of the three sites. Six criteria i…

  • Robert Kennedy

James N Giglio, Evan Thomas•ARTICLE•Journal of American History•2002

Over the past five years, historical inquiry has shifted from John F. Kennedy to Robert Kennedy with studies by Jeff Shesol, James Hilty, Ronald Steel, and Joseph Palermo. Despite the use of Kennedy's personal files, extensive interviews, and recently opened foreign policy sources, Evan Thomas, assistant managing editor of Newsweek, adds no surprising disclosures. Rather, his book serves as a readable synthesis that confirms many of Hilty's asses…
