Tsipporah, Her Son, and the Bridegroom of Blood
Through the centuries, scholars and readers have looked through a variety of lenses to discover what might be revealed by the story of Tsipporah's circumcision of her son in Exodus 4, and to assign meanings to it. The ambiguity of the language and the particular interests of readers in their contexts allow for a breadth of possibilities. However, in most cases, the son and his body fail to attract much scholarly concern. In this reading, I sugges…

The Neighborhood in the Internet
Today, "community" seems to be everywhere. At home, at work, and online, the vague but comforting idea of the community pervades every area of life. But have we lost the ability truly to understand what it means? The Neighborhood in the Internet investigates social and civic effects of community networks on local community, and how community network designs are appropriated and extended by community members. Carroll uses his conceptual model of "…
The Auteur of Anime
The building that houses the Ghibli Museum would be unusual anywhere, but in greater Tokyo, where architectural exuberance usually takes an angular, modernist form-black glass cubes, busy geometries of neon-it is particularly so. From the outside, the museum resembles an oversized adobe house, with slightly melted edges; its exterior walls are painted in saltwater-taffy shades of pink, green, and yellow. Inside, the museum looks like a child's fa…
Physical Education
This paper is a reaction to contemporary concerns surrounding the place of physical education in school curricula. It is intended to be both an ideological outline of the central characteristics of school physical education and an attempt to evaluate the forces shaping the subject. The paper concludes with a summary of the place and position of physical education in professional as well as academic hierarchies
An Emancipated Voice
A response to ‘Leisure, lifestyle and status
(1989). A response to ‘Leisure, lifestyle and status: a pluralist framework for analysis’. Leisure Studies: Vol. 8, No. 2, pp. 155-158
Understanding the Relationships between Women and Sport
The paper argues that because of the partial development of sports sociology in Britain, academic work on women and sport has been rooted in leisure and cultural studies, or has reacted from recreational provision policy. Feminist writers have therefore approached the area by making criticisms of both theory and policy making within leisure studies, and offering radical feminist perspectives for change. The areas of cultural and media studies hav…
Women and sport – social aspects
A wide ranging coverage is given of the issues involved in the interaction between women and sport. The pressures on girls and women to take part in or to refrain from various sports are considered. The question of the leisure time available to women in various situations, and the pressures on that leisure time, are discussed, and space is also given to the opportunities available at school level, the Equal Opportunities Commission's involvement …
