  • From Anthropophagy to Gambiarra in Postdigital Education

Open Access•Lucila Carvalho, Genaro Oliveira•ARTICLE•Postdigital Science and Education•2026

The current social, environmental, and geopolitical global crises call for educators’ engagement in more imaginative and future-focused postdigital education practices. Students need to learn to work together, to creatively, critically, and productively collaborate, in order to develop the capacities they will need to tackle the complex environmental and social problems our world is facing. This article argues that existing pluriversal narratives…

  • Alternative Futures in the Postdigital Classrooms of the Global South

Open Access•Lucila Carvalho, Genaro Oliveira•ARTICLE•Postdigital Science and Education•2025

When planning a learning event, teachers will carefully craft learning tasks, while choosing specific social arrangements and selecting material and digital tools for their students. Each learning event is also often influenced by wider socio-economic and political structures in society. Postdigital learning spaces are complex, hybrid, interconnected environments, shaped by a multitude of elements. Drawing on the notions of the postdigital classr…

  • Consulting the Past

Open Access•Calum Neill, Michael Belgrave et al.•ARTICLE•Public history review•2022

In many countries, the development of national history curricula has been politically controversial, causing great public interest and concern. Such controversies tend to bring into tension diverse political, social and cultural voices and their interests in a nation's history, expressing the historical consciousness of a society. At the extreme, 'history wars' emerge over what is prioritised for learning, and how it is learnt, especially when hi…

  • "A "great priest of civilization

    Open Access•Genaro Oliveira•ARTICLE•Brasiliana- Journal for Brazilian…•2020•References: 1

Using newspapers as primary sources, this article presents an innovative analysis of Victor Meirelles' A primeira missa no Brasil (1860). Beyond canonical interpretations of Meirelles' work as an erudite depiction of the beginning of Brazil's history in 1500, the article demonstrates that for viewers of that time the painting also, and above all, represented the beginning of the history of Brazilian art in the 1800s. It demonstrates this by follo…

  • Independent from Independence

Genaro Vilanova Miranda De Oliveira, Genaro Oliveira•ARTICLE•Journal of Iberian and Latin…•2011

Territorial integrity and the nation's cohesion are often referred to as distinctive Brazilian features within the wider Latin American independence context. However, it can be argued that this historiographical approach, based on the premises of homogeneity of time, population and geography, silences the histories of several societies that coexisted in synchronicity with, but were not subjugated to, the newly independent Brazilian state. This ar…
