  • Marked non-compliance with deforestation embargoes in the Brazilian Amazon

Open Access•Veríssimo César Sousa da Silva, Ima Célia Guimarães Vieira et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2022

Advances in monitoring capacity and strengthened law enforcement have helped to reduce deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon since the early 2000s. Embargoes imposed on the use of deforested land are important instruments for deterring deforestation and enabling forest recovery. However, the extent to which landowners respect embargoes in the Brazilian Amazon is unknown. In this study, we evaluated the current recovery status of embargoes due to …

  • Circulating microRNA associated with future relapse status in major depressive disorder

    Open Access•Qingqin S Li, David A Galbraith et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2022

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is an episodic condition with relapsing and remitting disease course. Elucidating biomarkers that can predict future relapse in individuals responding to an antidepressant treatment holds the potential to identify those patients who are prone to illness recurrence. The current study explored relationships between relapse risk in recurrent MDD and circulating microRNAs (miRNAs) that participate in RNA silencing and …

  • Trees at the Amazonia-Cerrado transition are approaching high temperature thresholds

Open Access•Igor Araújo, Beatriz Marimon et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2021

Land regions are warming rapidly. While in a warming world at extra-tropical latitudes vegetation adapted to higher temperatures may move in from lower latitudes this is not possible in the tropics. Thus, the limits of plant functioning will determine the nature and composition of future vegetation. The most temperature sensitive component of photosynthesis is photosystem II. Here we report the thermal safety margin (difference between photosyste…

  • Upturn in secondary forest clearing buffers primary forest loss in the Brazilian Amazon

  • Long-term decline of the Amazon carbon sink

    Open Access•Roel Brienen, R J W Brienen et al.•ARTICLE•Nature•2015

  • Increasing human dominance of tropical forests

Open Access•Su Lin Lewis, David P Edwards et al.•ARTICLE•Science•2015

Tropical forests house over half of Earth’s biodiversity and are an important influence on the climate system. These forests are experiencing escalating human influence, altering their health and the provision of important ecosystem functions and services. Impacts started with hunting and millennia-old megafaunal extinctions (phase I), continuing via low-intensity shifting cultivation (phase II), to today’s global integration, dominated by intens…

  • The Letterbooks of John Evelyn

Douglas Chambers, Douglas D C Chambers et al.•BOOK•Letterbooks of John Evelyn•2014

The Letterbooks of John Evelyn, a collection of more than eight hundred letters selected by Evelyn himself, constitutes an essential new resource for scholars of seventeenth-century England

  • A Escrita Como Descoberta

  • Exploring the likelihood and mechanism of a climate-change-induced dieback of the Amazon rainforest

Open Access•Y Malhi, Luiz Eduardo O C Aragão et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the National…•2009

We examine the evidence for the possibility that 21st-century climate change may cause a large-scale “dieback” or degradation of Amazonian rainforest. We employ a new framework for evaluating the rainfall regime of tropical forests and from this deduce precipitation-based boundaries for current forest viability. We then examine climate simulations by 19 global climate models (GCMs) in this context and find that most tend to underestimate current …

  • The effects of adapting a writing course to students' writing strategies

Open Access•Marleen Kieft, Gert Rijlaarsdam et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Educational…•2007•Cited by: 1•References: 16

Background. When writing a text, students are required to do several things simultaneously. They have to plan, translate and review, which involve demanding cognitive processes. In order to handle this complexity, writers need to develop a writing strategy. The two most well-defined writing strategies that have been identified, are those of a planning strategy and a revising strategy.Aims. To establish whether students will be more competent in m…
