Using the reading sciences and technology for teaching and learning in the Global South
In the Global South, persistent literacy challenges have been exacerbated by schooling disruptions during the pandemic and afterwards. Addressing this problem requires teachers who both understand how to teach reading, and can implement it effectively and efficiently. This research examines the effects of an intervention combining a technology-based teacher professional development and implementation of new knowledge and skills and ABRA-READS int…

Learning About Alphabetics and Fluency: Examining the Effectiveness of a Blended Professional Development Program for Kenyan Teachers
This study examined the effectiveness of an 18-week online blended teacher professional development program for Kenyan in-service teachers. Also, teachers received instruction on the use of an evidence-based early literacy software program for children. The 94 teachers completed two professional development training modules (alphabetics and fluency) and four surveys (one before and one after each module). Surveys assessed teachers’ confidence and…
Parents as the first teachers: An exploratory study of parent perceptions and use of an online instructional vocabulary module for parents
This exploratory study evaluates the effectiveness of an online instructional vocabulary module in enhancing parents’ understanding of early childhood vocabulary development and how to demonstrate this in a home environment. Forty-one parents viewed the vocabulary video and completed pre- and post-surveys. While most parents could define ‘vocabulary’ pre-viewing, post-viewing responses showed improved identification of its importance. Participant…
What is the experience of adults assigned male at birth with a diagnosis of Gender Incongruence at an NHS gender identity clinic in England who have sought treatment but decided to detransition or ret…
The phenomenon of gender identity detransition broadly speaking happens when someone re-identifies with their assigned-sex after transitioning their gender identity. There is a growing body of evidence exploring the prevalance of detransition yet few studies have sought to understand the lived experience of gender detransition, and those who also retransition. Five participants were recruited from an NHS GIC and interviewed about their experience…
Development of a metacognition co-curriculum for a university course in introductory organic chemistry
Metacognition is a fundamental skill that allows advanced learners to adapt to diverse learning environments. Metacognition, however, can be domain specific and students may fail to generalize metacognitive skills across domains. Thus, students in higher education may require specific training to acquire relevant metacognitive skills in differing domains or may need cueing to engage their metacognitive skills and knowledge in new domains. The pre…
How do Canadian parents evaluate numeracy content in math apps for young children
Well-designed math apps can foster children’s numeracy development. Although parents are interested in using math apps for their children, the quantity and variability in quality of apps can make app selection challenging. As such, it is important to know how parents evaluate numeracy content in math apps for their children. This study investigated parents’ evaluations of four numeracy apps of varying quality. Forty-five parents of 3- to 6-year-o…

In an initial study, first-year university students who received high school sexual health education in Ontario completed a questionnaire which assessed their satisfaction with sexual health education and asked whether students were pursuing or intended to pursue a human s…
The Simple View of Reading as a framework for national literacy initiatives: A hierarchical model of pupil‐level and classroom‐level factors
The Simple View of Reading ( SVR ) describes Reading Comprehension as the product of distinct child‐level variance in decoding (D) and linguistic comprehension ( LC ) component abilities. When used as a model for educational policy, distinct classroom‐level influences of each of the components of the SVR model have been assumed, but have not yet been demonstrated in basic research. Hierarchical linear modelling ( HLM ) of the SVR is thus explored…

Concepts in Conflict: Defining Peer Review
The term “peer review” has two distinct meanings in current usage among Australian social workers. It is the thesis of this paper that these definitional differences are more than a matter of semantics. Rather, they represent concepts in conflict. While they spring from a common concern for accountability, each definition is posited on different basic assumptions, answers different questions and leads to a different course of action. In short, th…

When can a lack of structure facilitate strategic processing of information
Background: Researchers examining the effectiveness of an elaboration strategy (answering ‘why’) for learning new information have been concerned with the familiarity of the materials and how that affects learning. It may be, however, that both how information is organised and familiarity impact on the potency of the strategy. Aims: We examined the influence of presentation structures (i.e., organisation of information) on the effectiveness of an…
