Sharing the Care
This article critically examines safety and innovation in out-of-home care, with a particular focus on addressing the entrenched overrepresentation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and young people in the child welfare system. Grounded in the practical insights of safe house workers and managers, the purpose of this article is to share an innovative practice case study—the Tangentyere Safe House in Alice Springs, Northern Territo…
Documenting Black Faculty Experiences in the "Stop Woke" Era
The Black Faculty Recruitment and Retention at the University of Florida Oral History Project documented the experiences of prejudice and discrimination by current and former UF faculty and staff members. A total of 46 respondents participated, 23 male and 23 female, between the Summer and Fall semester of 2021. While several salient themes emerged from these interviews, this paper focuses primarily on the respondents' experiences of silencing, p…

The Caribbeanization of Black Politics
The Caribbeanization of Black Politics: Race, Group Consciousness, and Political Participation in America examines the impact of the ethnic diversification of African American communities on the prospects for black political empowerment in four “gateway” cities of entry for black ethnic citizens - Boston, Chicago, Miami, and New York City. The Effect of Racial Group Consciousness on the Political Participation of African Americans and Black Ethnics in Miami-Dade County, Florida
This research examines group consciousness among people of African descent in Miami-Dade County, Florida, and its possible impact on their political participation. Using an original survey of over one thousand respondents, the authors question whether African Americans and black ethnics (Africans, Afro-Caribbean Americans, Afro-Cuban Americans, and Haitians) possess a shared group consciousness and, if so, why. Second, does group consciousness or…
Church Attendance, Social Capital, and Black Voting Participation
Objectives. We test the traditional studies of political participation that suggest enhanced education and income will help reduce the racial gap in voting. Methods. We adopt a Bayesian model to test the impact of education and income on both black and white racial groups. We also link the explanation of black voting participation to social capital. Results. We find that bonding and bridging social capital as well as human capital are all importa…

The Limitations of the Deracialization Concept in the 2001 Los Angeles Mayoral Election
This paper investigates the use of a deracialized electoral strategy by a Latino candidate, Antonio Villaraigosa, during his campaign for mayor of the city of Los Angeles, California. The aim of the research is to explain why the Latino candidate, given that Los Angeles has a sizeable Latino and African American population, loss the election to a white candidate who played the race card. We find that Villaraigosa's deracialized campaign was unsuc…
Assessment of bully/victim problems in 8 to 11 year-olds
The aim of the present study was to develop two six-item self-report scales (the Bullying-Behaviour Scale and the Peer-Victimisation Scale) to assess bully-victim problems at school. These scales were designed so that they could be immersed within the Self-Perception Profile for Children (SPPC: Harter, 1985) thus reducing the saliency of the items. Internal reliability of both scales was found to be satisfactory (Cronbach's alpha = 0.83 and 0.82 …
