Beliefs about learning, self-regulated strategies and text comprehension among Chinese children
BackgroundMost studies have investigated college and high school students' epistemological beliefs in Western contexts, with few studies examining how beliefs about learning are related to children's strategies and comprehension in the Chinese cultural context.AimsThe present study investigated Chinese elementary school children's beliefs about learning and examined their relations with self-regulated learning strategies and text comprehension.Sa…
Test of the Technology Acceptance Model for a Web-Based Information System in a Hong Kong Chinese Sample
The modified technology acceptance model was used to predict actual Blackboard usage (a web-based information system) in a sample of 57 Hong Kong student teachers whose mean age was 27.8 yr. (SD = 6.9). While the general form of the model was supported, Application-specific Self-efficacy was a more powerful predictor of system use than Behavioural Intention as predicted by the theory of reasoned action. Thus in this cultural and educational conte…
Superstition and Self-Efficacy in Chinese Postgraduate Students
43 Chinese postgraduate education students (16 men and 27 women), whose mean age was 33.5 yr., completed a questionnaire measuring superstitious beliefs (Superstitious Beliefs Scale) and self-efficacy (General Perceived Self-efficacy Scale). Higher scores on belief in superstition were associated with lower rated self-efficacy. While not significant, the observed correlation of -.28 between superstitious belief and self-efficacy was of a similar …
Psychometric Properties of the Proactive Attitude Scale in Students at the University of Hong Kong
The 15-item Proactive Attitude Scale is defined as a unidimensional measure of belief in one's ability to effect positive life changes. The current study tested the scale's unidimensionality assumption with confirmatory factor analysis on a mixed sample of 157 fourth-year Bachelor of Education (n=30) and first year Masters of Education (n=121) students from The University of Hong Kong. 49 were men and 108 women, with a median age of 31 yr. The co…
Psychometric Properties of the Proactive Attitude Scale in Students at the University of Hong Kong
A nonparametric item analysis of a selected item subset of the Learning Process Questionnaire
Background: Although there have been numerous studies conducted on the psychometric properties of Biggs' Learning Process Questionnaire (LPQ), these have involved the use of traditional omnibus measures of scale quality such as corrected item total correlations, internal consistency estimates of reliability, and factor analysis. However, these omnibus measures of scale quality are sample dependent and fail to model item responses as a function of…
Using a Small Sample Q Sort to Identify Item Groups
A small sample of 40 second-year university students in Hong Kong were asked to perform a Q sort on the 36 items of a questionnaire used to assess six dimensions of student approaches to learning, the Learning Process Questionnaire. Participants were instructed to sort the items into as many groups as they liked with the only conditions being that all items within a group be as similar as possible in perceived meaning and that no item be placed i…

Item-level and subscale-level factoring of Biggs' Learning Process Questionnaire (LPQ) in a mainland Chinese sample
Background. The learning process questionnaire (LPQ) has been the source of intensive cross-cultural study. However, an item-level factor analysis of all the LPQ items simultaneously has never been reported. Rather, items within each subscale have been factor analysed to establish subscale unidimensionality and justify the use of composite subscale scores. Aims. It was of major interest to see if the six logically constructed items groups of the …
Confirmatory Factor Analysis of the Chinese Version of the Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire
Confirmatory factor analysis was used to evaluate the factor structure of a Chinese version of Pintrich and De Groot’s Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire (MSLQ). Data were gathered from a sample of 477 junior high and high school students, ranging in age from 12 to 19 years ( M = 15.4, SD = 1.84), in Hong Kong. Results indicated that a modified five-factor model had a better overall fit to the data than the five-factor model reported…
Assessing Thinking Styles in the Theory of Mental Self-Government
The purpose of this study was to examine the appropriateness in a non-Western context of the Thinking Styles Inventory and Sternberg's underlying theory of mental self-government. The way to achieve this goal was through analyzing data collected from 88 Hong Kong postsecondary students. The results indicated that the scales were reasonably reliable, and factor analysis of the scales was fairly encouraging. The discrepancy found in the number of d…
Confirmatory Factor Analysis of the Revised Causal Dimension Scale
The Causal Dimension Scale-II is conceptually important for research on attributions as it taps directly the subjects' own views of the dimensions underlying their causal ascriptions. However, this research based on the responses of 120 Nepalese tertiary students to the Causal Dimension Scale-II for both success and failure outcomes indicates that the internal consistency reliability of the External Control scale is of doubtful adequacy and that …
Covariance Structure Analysis of a Test of Moral Orientation and Moral Judgment
Covariance structure analysis was used to confirm that the moral orientation and moral judgment subtests of the Moral Development Test (MDT) (Ma, 1987) captured the hierarchical stage structure of moral development predicted by Kohlberg's stage theory of moral development. Furthermore, the simplex ordering between the stage scores of the MDT subtests was shown to be invariant in adolescents and adults across two cultures-British and Hong Kong Chi…
