  • What Children's Temperature Predictions Reveal of Their Understanding of Temperature

    Open Access•Richard Cowan, NOEL B SUTCLIFFE•ARTICLE•British Journal of Educational…•1991

S ummary . Why primary school children have considerable difficulty in measuring and estimating temperature is not known. It may be because they do not understand temperature or more simply that they do not understand the temperature scale. The latter is suggested by the improvement in their temperature predictions when the temperatures are described verbally rather than numerically. However, success on verbal versions may be an artefact of the p…

  • Children's Use of Counting and Guidelines in Judging Relative Number

    Open Access•Richard Cowan, H Daniels•ARTICLE•British Journal of Educational…•1989

S ummary . Nine 5‐year‐old infant school children, nine children with moderate learning difficulties, and nine children attending a school for the aphasic were selected on the basis of a counting test to judge relative number under three conditions: counting, guidelines, and control. The displays used consisted of two rows of dots and varied in numerosity and configuration. Length consistent displays were judged right by all children in all condi…

  • Situational Biases in Teacher Impressions

Open Access•Norman Worrall, Richard Cowan•ARTICLE•British Journal of Educational…•1983

S ummary . Teachers were given a lecture on misattribution in social reasoning, with special emphasis on a study by Jones and Harris (1967) showing that even when people know someone is only role‐playing elements of that role are still attributed to the person. They were then shown short videotapes which they knew to be of children merely acting out ‘good pupil' and ‘bad pupil’ roles. Even though teachers were thoroughly familiar with the mechani…

  • Performance in number conservation tasks as a function of the number of items

    Open Access•Richard Cowan•ARTICLE•British Journal of Psychology•1979

It has traditionally been considered that successful performance in a test of number conservation entails the appreciation of a principle that holds for all numbers. In the first of two experiments 5 year old children were found to give more conserving responses to small number versions in a test of identity conservation than to a large number version. In the second experiment the superiority of performance with small number versions was reduced …
