Jiatian Zhang, Yi Ren et al.•ARTICLE•Applied Developmental Science•2025

The negative effect of poverty on children’s cognitive development has been proven, but few studies have examined the potential role of perceived poverty discrimination on poor children’s cognitive development. This study investigated the effect of perceived discrimination on executive function, the mediating effect of self-esteem and the moderating effect of perceived social support among 711 children aged 8–13 (M = 9.97 years, SD = 1.19 years, …

  • The effects of allostatic load, bullying, and social mobility belief on depression among socioeconomically disadvantaged Chinese adolescents

Open Access•Ye Zhang, Yizhan Deng et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Research on Adolescence•2025•References: 7

Allostatic load (AL), the cumulative physiological cost of early adversity, is associated with increased depression risk, especially among disadvantaged adolescents. Bullying, which peaks during adolescence, also predicts depressive symptoms. However, how early (e.g., AL) and recent (e.g., bullying) stressors interact to influence adolescent depression remains unclear. While social mobility belief-adolescents' expectations of upward socioeconomic…

  • Perceived social support mitigates the associations among household chaos and health and well‐being in rural early adolescents

Open Access•Kehan Mei, Feng Zhang et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Adolescence•2024

PURPOSE: Previous studies have demonstrated that early adolescents residing in chaotic households experience adverse health and well-being outcomes. However, the potential protective factors that mitigate the relationship between household chaos and early adolescents' health and well-being remain unknown. Accordingly, this study aims to investigate whether perceived social support moderates the link between household chaos and the health and well…

Open Access•Yi Ren, Chenyi Zuo et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Psychology•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 66

Poverty impedes children's executive function (EF). Therefore, it is necessary to mitigate the negative effect of poverty by developing efficient interventions to improve poor children's cognitive function. In three studies, we examined whether high‐level construals can improve EF among poor children in China. In Study 1, we observed a positive relationship between family socioeconomic status and children's EF, which was moderated by construal le…

  • Family Socioeconomic Status, Parental Involvement, and Academic Achievement

Open Access•Feng Zhang, Ying Jiang et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Early Adolescence•2021•Cited by: 5•References: 14

The correlations between a low family socioeconomic status (SES) and adolescents’ poor academic outcomes have been widely documented. However, the mechanisms through which family SES is associated with adolescents’ academic achievement are not well understood. Therefore, this study examined the mediating roles of different types of parental involvement (i.e., parental school-based involvement, academic socialization, and home-based involvement) a…

  • Family socio-economic status and children's executive function

Open Access•Hua Ming, Feng Zhang et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Psychology•2021•Cited by: 6•References: 71

Family socio-economic status (SES) is significantly related to disparities in children's executive function. Children from economically disadvantaged backgrounds perform worse on executive function tasks than their peers from high-SES families. The protective factors in the relationship between SES and executive function have not been sufficiently investigated, especially from the perspective of parents' and children's perceptions and expectation…

The adverse impact of a low family socioeconomic status (SES) on rural-to-urban migrant children’s academic achievement has been widely demonstrated. However, knowledge regarding the mechanisms underlying this relationship is limited. The current study aimed to examine the potential mediating effects of educational expectations and the moderating effects of subjective SES on the relationship between family SES and academic achievement among Chine…

  • The Effects of Delay Time and Foreknowledge on Task Switching

Silin Huang, Si-Lin HUANG et al.•ARTICLE•Acta Psychologica Sinica•2012
