Development and psychometric evaluation of the CanSmart questionnaire to measure chronic disease self-management tasks
In this preliminary analysis, two self-management tasks subscales exhibit good psychometric properties. Two items that did not load on either scale may represent additional dimensions of self-management. This work provides the basis for further scale development and use in research and clinical practice
Adherence to a Telephone-Supported Depression Self-Care Intervention for Adults With Chronic Physical Illnesses
We assessed adherence to and predictors of two components of a telephone-supported self-care intervention for depression among primary care adults aged 40 and above with chronic physical illnesses and comorbid depressive symptoms. Participants received a “toolkit” containing six self-care tools. Trained lay self-care “coaches” negotiated a contact schedule of up to weekly contacts. Study outcomes were levels of completion of the self-care tool an…
Emergency Department Visits and Primary Care Among Adults With Chronic Conditions
BACKGROUND: An emergency department (ED) visit may be a marker for limited access to primary medical care, particularly among those with ambulatory care sensitive chronic conditions (ACSCC). OBJECTIVES: In a population with universal health insurance, to examine the relationships between primary care characteristics and location of last general physician (GP) contact (in an ED vs. elsewhere) among those with and without an ACSCC. RESEARCH DESIGN:…
Temporary work and depressive symptoms: A propensity score analysis
Understanding the social patterning of smoking practices: A Dynamic Typology
In many countries, cigarette consumption has been on a declining trend for over 20 years. However, different patterns of smoking practices have emerged. Our goal is to explore how the patterning of smoking practices occurs and persists over time, and to investigate the factors that could help interpret these patterns. Data were derived from the National Population Health Surveys and comprise a large representative sample of the population. Dynami…
Project Direct: Pilot Study of A Collaborative Intervention for Depressed Seniors
This pilot study assessed the feasibility of a randomized controlled trial of an intervention for major depression among seniors in Canadian family practice. The intervention involved care by a family physician augmented by a Depression Care Practitioner, the latter working under the supervision of a psychiatrist. Treatments included family doctors' prescriptions of antidepressants according to an evidence-based study algorithm and/or brief probl…
Uses and limitations of statistical accounting for random error correlations, in the validation of dietary questionnaire assessments
Objective: To examine statistical models that account for correlation between random errors of different dietary assessment methods, in dietary validation studies. Setting: In nutritional epidemiology, sub-studies on the accuracy of the dietary questionnaire measurements are used to correct for biases in relative risk estimates induced by dietary assessment errors. Generally, such validation studies are based on the comparison of questionnaire me…
Evaluation of under- and overreporting of energy intake in the 24-hour diet recalls in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (Epic)
EI tends to be underestimated in the vast majority of the EPIC centres, although to varying degrees; at the aggregate level most centres were below the expected reference value of 1.55. Underreporting seems to be more prevalent among women than men in the EPIC calibration sample. The hypothesis that BMI (or weight) and age are causally related to underreporting seems to be confirmed in the present work. This introduces further complexity in the w…
Describing Health States: Methodologic Issues in Obtaining Values for Health States
In health status index construction quantitative values for different states of health are frequently obtained by presenting written descriptions to raters whose values are elicited using one or more methods. In this study the authors examined the influence of several aspects of this measurement process upon the quantitative results obtained. They prepared a set of written descriptions of health states, each state being described in both a standa…
