Bugün bilim adamları, Bizans İmparatorluğu'nun tüm varlığı boyunca çöküş durumunda bulunduğunu iddia eden Gibbon'ın varsayımını haklı olarak reddetmektedirler.     The history of medieval crusading may be conveniently divided into two chapters.
