Development of teacher professional identity: Perspectives from self-determination theory
This research explored the development of teacher professional identity in pre-service teachers through the Self-Determination Theory (SDT) perspective to answer how psychological needs satisfaction facilitated this development. Through qualitative interviews, this study uncovered how coursework learning supported the basic needs of pre-service teachers by providing opportunities to learn what they wanted to learn and be involved in learning comm…
Motivating students using autonomy-supportive instructions: A pilot study
All responsible educators strive to create the most positive climate in their classrooms and to provide their students with the most positive learning experiences. However, they may not always know what to say and do to be most motivating. Grounded in the Self-Determination Theory, this study examined the effect of autonomy-supportive instructional behaviours, operationalised as “conveying choice”, “taking students’ perspective”, and “providing m…
A qualitative examination into the school-related factors affecting teachers’ motivating styles
Mindfulness and motivation in social-emotional learning: Through the lens of self-determination theory
Closing the gap of teacher professional identity in student teachers between coursework learning and teaching practice: Perspectives from Self-determination Theory
In this longitudinal study, latent basis modelling was employed to capture nuanced developmental trajectories and examine the predictive power of perceived satisfaction of basic needs on the development of teacher professional identity in a group of student teachers (N = 266 at the initial time point). The findings reveal a developmental pattern in which teacher professional identity shows positive growth during coursework learning but subsequent…
Perceived parental expectations and their role in academic and psychosocial functioning
Parental and teacher expectations for students’ academic performance, expressed as confidence in students’ academic potential, may play a critical role in fostering holistic development. However, the specific mechanisms through which these perceived expectations influence academic motivation and psychosocial well-being remain underexplored. This research tests a hypothesized model of the role of mathematics self-concepts in linking perceived pare…

Preparing teachers for the changing future (2014–2018)
Evaluating the Teacher Professional Identity of Student Teachers: Development and Validation of the Teacher Professional Identity Scale
This study sought to develop and validate an instrument to measure teacher professional identity of student teachers. Through a literature review, three indicators, namely teacher self-efficacy, commitment to teaching and professional orientation, were chosen to form the construct for validation. The factor structure was first tested through confirmatory factor analysis using a sample of 185 student teachers and cross-validated using a new sample…
A motivation profile analysis of Malay students in Singapore
This study aims to examine the motivational profiles of Malay students in Singapore-based self-regulated learning framework (Pintrich & De Groot, 1990) and self-determination theory (SDT; Deci & Ryan, 1985). The sample consisted of 740 secondary school students from 24 tuition centres for Malay students only. The students were from three academic streams in Singapore (Express, Normal-academic, and Normal-technical). Using cluster analysis, five d…

Building Autonomous Learners: Perspectives from Research and Practice Using Self-Determination Theory
A Preliminary Examination of Teachers’ and Students’ Perspectives on Autonomy-Supportive Instructional Behaviors
The present study focuses on the perspectives of teachers and students in Singapore schools after an autonomy-supportive classroom intervention. Nurturing of students to become motivated and self-regulated learners can be achieved by promoting an autonomy-supportive learning climate. This study examines the perspectives of teachers and students in an in-depth and meaningful manner after the classroom intervention. Through students’ viewpoints, te…
Longitudinal changes in physical fitness performance in youth: A multilevel latent growth curve modeling approach
Using a multilevel latent growth curve modeling (LGCM) approach, this study examined longitudinal change in levels of physical fitness performance over time (i.e. four years) in young adolescents aged from 12–13 years. The sample consisted of 6622 students from 138 secondary schools in Singapore. Initial analyses found between-school variation on fitness test scores with intra-class correlations ranging from 0.02–0.19. Subsequent multilevel growt…
Understanding students' motivation in project work: A 2×2 achievement goal approach
Background The project work (PW) initiative was launched in 2000 by the Ministry of Education, Singapore, to encourage application of knowledge across disciplines, and to develop thinking, communication, collaboration, and metacognitive skills. Although PW has been introduced for a few years, few studies have examined the motivation of students in PW, especially with the use of the recently proposed 2 × 2 achievement goal framework.Aim To use a c…
Promoting enjoyment in girls' physical education: The impact of goals, beliefs, and self-determination
This study examined the network of relationships between spor t ability beliefs, achievement goals, self-determination and female students' enjoyment in school physical education (PE). Female secondar y students ( n = 343) from a single-sex secondar y school in Singapore par ticipated in the survey. They were assessed on spor t ability beliefs, goal orientations, relative autonomy, perceived competence and enjoyment in PE. The findings establishe…
A longitudinal study of students' academic self-concept in a streamed setting: The Singapore context
Background. Although several studies support the existence of a negative stream effect on lower-ability stream students' academic self-concept, there is not enough longitudinal research evidence to preclude the possibility that the stream effect may only be temporary. In addition, not much is known about the effect of streaming on changes in students' academic self-concept over time.Aims. The main aims of the study were to examine the effect of s…
