  • The 2023 SSSP Presidential Address Recycled

    Open Access•Shirley Jackson, Shirley A Jackson•ARTICLE•Social Problems•2024•References: 3

This presidential address uses an autoethnographic approach to social problems to give the audience an opportunity to reflect upon the ways in which social problems exist, morph, wane, and return. Looking back over the social problems we have encountered over our lives as individuals and as social scientists, how might we work not only to identify but solve problems? Social problems are difficult to solve, since problems change with the times as …

  • A Dystopian Post-Civil Rights Era

    Open Access•Shirley Jackson, Shirley A Jackson•ARTICLE•Sociological Perspectives•2023•Cited by: 1

Universities and colleges, K-12 schools, corporations, professional associations, and other social institutions advocate for change at the same time they are taking steps to prevent it from actually occurring. The result is an endless cycle of words of support followed by inaction, obfuscation, and outright lies. It is no wonder that burnout and frustration face those who would like to do some good but are experiencing gaslighting by those determ…

  • Oregon's K-12 Ethnic Studies Bill

    Shirley Jackson, Shirley A Jackson•ARTICLE•Ethnic studies review•2019

In 2017, Oregon passed House Bill 2845 requiring Ethnic Studies curriculum in grades K-12. It was the first state in the nation to do so. The bill passed almost fifty years after the founding of the country's first Ethnic Studies department. The passage of an Ethnic Studies bill in a state that once banned African Americans and removed Indigenous peoples from their land requires further examination. In addition, the bill mandates that Ethnic Stud…

  • Majorities

    Open Access•Shirley Jackson, Shirley A Jackson•OTHER•The Blackwell Encyclopedia of…•2017

Majorities is a term that refers to the dominant group in a society, and can be defined as members of a group who hold power and have the greatest access to resources. A majority group does not necessarily imply a numerical majority. This distinction is most clear with the example of the former apartheid system in South African where the numerical white minority were the majority and the numerical majority, blacks, the minority group. Majorities …

Majorities is a term that refers to the dominant group in a society, and can be defined as members of a group who hold power in a society and have access to resources. They need not be the numerical majority. They differ from minorities in that minorities do not hold power, be it economic, political, or social. Additionally, majorities develop the laws which define the rights of majority and minority group members. South Africa during the aparthe…

Children, especially poor African American children, are not afforded an equal opportunity to learn if the key barriers to their health have not been addressed-no matter what the planned reform or compensatory or enrichment educational strategies may be. Therefore, any serious, committed effort to provide poor African American students with an opportunity to learn must include a comprehensive approach to addressing the health and social environme…
