The role of Approximate Number System (ANS) in adult symbolic number processing remains controversial. Despite evidences for a linear and precise representation of symbolic numbers in adults, this study, based on Dual-Process Theory (DPT), proposes that ANS should still influence symbolic number processing in adults. To examine this possibility, we conducted two hand tracking experiments using a manual reaching numerical comparison task. In Exper…
Trajectories of Perceived Parental Psychological Control and the Longitudinal Associations with Chinese Adolescents’ School Adjustment across High School Years
Effects of language switching frequency on inhibitory control in bilingual preschool children

Exploring mechanisms of rapid automatized naming to arithmetic skills in Chinese primary schoolers
Rapid automatized naming (RAN) is associated with children's arithmetic performance, which is multifactorial by nature and consists of arithmetic fluency, arithmetic procedure, and word problems. Yet, it is unclear whether RAN can predict all key aspects of arithmetic skills independently and what cognitive mechanisms may explain this relation. Using a sample of Chinese primary school students ( N = 170), results showed that while RAN was associa…
Are the relations of rapid automatized naming with reading and mathematics accuracy and fluency bidirectional? Evidence from a 5-year longitudinal study with Chinese children
Despite the widespread use of rapid automatized naming (RAN) tasks in reading and mathematics research, little is known about the direction of their relation. Thus, in this longitudinal study, we examined the direction of the relation between RAN and reading/mathematics accuracy and fluency. One-hundred and eighty-three Grade 1 Chinese children from Shanghai (84 girls and 99 boys; Mage = 85.98 months, SD = 3.76) were followed until Grade 5 and we…
Influence of parental academic involvement on the achievement goal orientations of high school students in China
BACKGROUND: Many studies on parental involvement in their children's education have limitations in cross-sectional designs in spite of examining the relationships between this involvement and achievement goal orientations. Thus, little is known about whether and how parental involvement affects achievement goal orientations over time. AIMS: This study examines the influence of parental involvement on achievement goal orientations among Chinese hi…

Why Are Chinese Mothers More Controlling Than American Mothers? “My Child Is My Report Card”
Chinese parents exert more control over children than do American parents. The current research examined whether this is due in part to Chinese parents' feelings of worth being more contingent on children's performance. Twice over a year, 215 mothers and children (Mage = 12.86 years) in China and the United States (European and African American) reported on psychologically controlling parenting. Mothers also indicated the extent to which their wo…
Mothers’ Goals for Adolescents in the United States and China
This research examined children's socialization toward culturally valued goals during adolescence in the United States and China. 223 mothers listed and ranked their 5 most important goals for their children (mean age = 12.85 years). Children ranked the importance of the goals listed by their mothers and explained why they were or were not important to them. American mothers placed heightened emphasis on their children maintaining feelings of wor…
The Working Memory Features of Junior Students with Mathematics Learning Disabilities
An Investigation of Aids-related Knowledge and Reactions among College Students in China
Cultural Similarities in Self-Esteem Functioning
East Asians report lower levels of self-esteem than North Americans and Western Europeans. These differences could mean that self-esteem is a culturally bounded construct, experienced differently in different cultures, or they could mean that self-esteem is a universally relevant construct whose average level is raised or lowered in different cultures. To examine these possibilities, the authors assessed self-esteem functioning in China and Ameri…
