Understanding exam access arrangements in practice
Secondary students with specific learning difficulties (SpLD) often face challenges with academic tasks, particularly with high‐stakes examinations. Exam access arrangements (EAA) are provided as reasonable adjustments to reduce disadvantage for students with SpLD. However, the application process for EAA has become increasingly bureaucratic, requiring extensive documentation and formal assessment. The number of applications for AA continues to r…
Prospects for applying a theory of change model to the use of research evidence in autism education
Educators and educational researchers show continued interest in how schools can best make use of research evidence in bringing about change in practice in schools. A number of models have been developed to support schools in this challenge, such as research learning communities and lesson study. However, questions remain about the effectiveness of such models, their fit to the particular needs of schools and the extent to which they contribute m…
The Experiences of Weak and Non-Swimmers Caught in Rip Currents at Australian Beaches
© 2015,Geographical Society of New South Wales Inc. ABSTRACT: Beach rip currents present a risk to weak and non-swimmers, whose limited open water swim competencies may render them incapable of swimming out of these common and strong offshore flows. Here, the aim has been to explore this group's vulnerability by identifying how the limits of their swimming competencies influence their abilities to successfully execute a rip current exit strategy.…

Four hundred seventy-three substance-abusing women were assessed for histories of sexual abuse. The results of bivariate analysis indicated that Sexual Abuse Survivors (SAS) had higher levels of depression, anxiety, and psychological distress. A greater number of SAS reported histories of emotional and physical abuse. They also had greater severity on ASI scales of alcohol, drug, medical, and family/social difficulty. Logistic regression analysis…
Reconceptualizing Substance Abuse Treatment in Therapeutic Communities
Although therapeutic communities (TC) have achieved promising results in the treatment of substance abusers, several areas have been identified which might further enhance TC treatment effectiveness. Two of these, resiliency theory and the role of social work practitioners, are discussed. Resiliency theory provides a framework for re-conceptualizing interventions as they apply to therapeutic communities. Resiliency is explicated and illustrated v…
Coping Behaviors of Cocaine Dependent Women
Four-hundred and forty-nine cocaine dependent women from three treatment programs were assessed for level of addiction severity, family difficulty, medical problems, and types of coping strategies at treatment entry. Results indicate that the women utilized more problem-focused coping at treatment entry than emotion-focused. And, findings also revealed that most women used similar coping strategies regardless of intensity or philosophy of the tre…
Cross-cultural comparison of US and Nigerian adolescents' HIV-related knowledge, attitudes, and risk behaviour
Attitudes towards AIDS prevention, AIDS-related knowledge, and sexual behaviour of Nigerian adolescents and their African-American counterparts in two geographic regions of the United States were compared to assess cross-cultural similarities and differences between the adolescents. This study was conducted as the first in a programmatic sequence of activities leading toward the adaptation of a risk reduction intervention that was developed in th…
The effect of olfactory stimulation on fluency, vividness of imagery and associated mood
Twenty‐two subjects were asked to visualize positive and negative phrases following exposure to either chamomile oil or placebo. Chamomile oil significantly increased the latency for all images, and shifted mood ratings and frequency judgements in a more positive direction, suggesting a possible mode of action for such oils
