Observing and interpreting clinical process
This paper describes a method for investigating clinical process, Layered Analysis, which combines therapist countertransference reports and multi‐faceted microanalytic research approaches. Findings from the application of Layered Analysis to video‐recorded micro‐events of rupture and repair in four psychoanalytic parent–infant psychotherapy sessions are presented. Layered analysis showed that countertransference and observation are complementary…
The Representation of Immigration. A Retrospective Newspaper Analysis
The article reports a comparative study of the representation of migration in media from three countries (Greece, Italy, and Turkey), over 2001–2018 period. Analysis showed the salience of two main frames – the view of migration as a matter of security and human beings as well. Themes framing the media discourses on migration are grounded on a semantic structure that is quite similar across the three countries compared, despite their considerable…
Studying the process of psychoanalytic parent–infant psychotherapy
This paper presents findings from an intensive, mixed methods case study of one session of psychoanalytic parent–infant psychotherapy (PPIP) addressing early relational trauma, and aims to shed light on the multimodal interactive processes that take place in the moment‐to‐moment exchanges comprising the therapeutic encounter. Different research methods were used on video material from PPIP sessions, including microanalysis of adult–infant interac…
Globalization, demand of sense and enemization of the other
The paper outlines a cultural–psychological interpretation of the current European societies’ socio-institutional crisis. To this end, preliminarily, the cultural psychological view of social behaviour is outlined, focusing on the idea that socio-political choices depend on how people make sense of their world. Second, the paper provides an interpretation of the current socio-political European scenario of crisis, based on the main results of a r…
Discourses of development in the consulting room
This paper aims to highlight the potential contribution of the arguments developed in Burman’s Deconstructing Developmental Psychology for exploring the implications of discourses around development for the practice of family therapy with children. Through the analysis of one brief systemic therapy with a stepfamily, formed following the mother’s death, this paper examined how discourses from developmental psychology, including representations of…
Evaluating the Talking Cure
This article draws upon an extensive review of narrative, discourse, and conversation analyses of psychotherapy in order to outline, critically discuss, and evaluate claims made by these studies regarding the usefulness of these approaches for psychotherapy assessment. These analytic approaches are seen as compatible with the emphasis on language and meaning that characterises much of contemporary therapy theory. The claims regarding what can be …
Parents' constructions of professional knowledge, expertise and authority during assessment and diagnosis of their child for an autistic spectrum disorder
This paper presents a discourse analysis of parents' talk about the knowledge, expertise and authority of professionals, during assessment and diagnosis of their child for an autistic spectrum disorder at a Child Development Centre. Focusing on the positional level of analysis, it was suggested that parents' constructions of professional expertise and authority were inherently ambivalent and at times contradictory. It was further argued that this…
Parents' Constructions of the 'Problem' during Assessment and Diagnosis of their Child for an Autistic Spectrum Disorder
The majority of studies on the effects of a diagnosis of learning disability in the family have employed traditional 'loss' and 'stress reaction' paradigms. In contrast to this approach, the current analysis employed a form of discourse analysis to explore the ways in which parents represented the 'problem' during the process of assessment of their child for an autistic spectrum disorder. The analysis suggested that parents employed three main di…
