High-Precision Atmospheric 14 CO 2 Measurement at the Rafter Radiocarbon Laboratory
This article describes a new capability for high-precision 14 C measurement of CO 2 from air at the Rafter Radiocarbon Laboratory, GNS Science, New Zealand. We evaluate the short-term within-wheel repeatability and long-term between-wheel repeatability from measurements of multiple aliquots of control materials sourced from whole air. Samples are typically measured to 650,000 14 C counts, providing a nominal accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) st…
Paleogroundwater in the Moutere Gravel Aquifers Near Nelson, New Zealand
Radiocarbon, 18 O, and chemical concentrations have been used to identify groundwater recharged during the last ice age near Nelson, New Zealand. Moutere Gravel underlies most of the Moutere Depression, a 30-km-wide system of valleys filled with Plio-Pleistocene gravel. The depression extends northwards into Tasman Bay, which was above sea level when the North and South Islands of New Zealand were connected during the last glaciation. The aquifer…
The Politics of Spirituality
This book provides the first in-depth case study of ‘Renew’ – a pastoral programme of religious revitalization. The programme originated in the United States in 1976 and has been widely adopted throughout the Roman Catholic world. Initiated from the top down in a hierarchically-structured church, it can be seen as an example of clerical attempts to stimulate and control lay spirituality in an organizationally controlled manner (as opposed to gras…
Changes in patients during treatment at the Henderson Hospital therapeutic community during 1977–81
This study is the third in a series which has used repertory grids to evaluate changes in people in various ‘treatment’ milieux. In this paper findings are reported for 70 men and 33 women patients at the Henderson Hospital. Significantly more patients in the hospital changed in desired directions (‘benefited’) than in previous milieux studied. Grid interpretation of ‘benefit’ seemed to have face value for therapists when compared with clinical i…
Problems in the Analysis of Soft Data and Some Suggested Solutions
Research workers often abandon interesting 'soft data' accumulated in the course of project work because of problems of analysis. This paper describes solutions to some familiar problems which emerged during the course of five years evaluative work with a community work organization. The suggestions for dealing with the mass of data systematically and in a manner which generates a conceptual framework, and the means of establishing reliability an…
