Reading self‐efficacy and behaviour profiles of beginning readers and the relationship with literacy development
Background Children who experience difficulties developing early literacy skills have been of major concern because of the broader effect on subsequent literacy development. Addressing the needs of learners also requires understanding distal variables that influence the development of early literacy skills. Two distal variables implicated in developing literacy skills include reading self‐efficacy and behaviour. Method The current paper explored …
British Quota Production and Film Costs in the Early 1930s
This article explores the economic contexts of British film production in the early 1930s through an analysis of the cost data provided in a ledger compiled by the Board of Trade documenting the statutory costs of all British ‘long’ films registered for renters’ quota during the quota year 1 April 1932 to 31 March 1933. This is the most comprehensive source for British film costs in the early 1930s. The evidence provided by the ledger suggests a …
‘Like a velvet whisper’
This article explores the career of voice actress Nikki van der Zyl (1935–2021), who dubbed many of the early ‘Bond girls’. The article takes van der Zyl's re-voicing work on the Bond films as a starting point to highlight some of the methodological challenges involved in researching the history of voice artists – a group of film workers who are doubly invisible in so far as they are neither seen on screen nor are they usually credited. To that e…
‘The Billings verdict’
This article analyses the annual surveys of the British box office compiled by chief film reviewer R. H. (‘Josh’) Billings for the trade paper Kinematograph Weekly between 1936 and 1962. Billings's surveys, known as the ‘Book of Form’, came to be accepted as an authoritative guide to the performance of films at the British box office despite the absence of any actual revenue figures. The article considers how the ‘Book of Form’ was compiled and c…

‘The same virile ability of Val Guest’
This article draws upon the Film Finances Archive to propose an alternative hierarchy of British directors based on their ability to deliver films on budget and schedule rather than on the artistic qualities of their films. An analysis of the archive’s large collection of budgets and cost reports for British feature films since 1950 highlights which directors had a record of economical and timely delivery of their films. The article shows that th…

This article explores the problematic production history of Golden Rendezvous (1977), an action-adventure film based on a novel by Alistair MacLean. It draws upon the archive of the completion guarantor Film Finances to document the complex international financing arrangements that exemplified the practice of distribution pre-sales in the 1970s. Golden Rendezvous is a highly revealing case study of financial mismanagement and political controvers…

The production of The Trial was bedevilled by…

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization recommends strategies to improve urban design, public transportation, and recreation facilities to facilitate physical activity for non-communicable disease prevention for an increasingly urbanized global population. Fifty Years in the Tardis
How can we explain the longevity of Doctor Who? This article will consider what I refer to as the 'external history' of the series, its place in the institutional and cultural histories of the BBC and British television, as well as the development of its 'internal history', the content and mythos of the series itself. In particular, it will focus on three 'historical moments' that each in their way denned the series at that moment: the mid-1960s,…

Projecting Tomorrow Science Fiction and Popular Cinema
Cinema and science fiction were made for each other. The science fiction genre has produced some of the most extraordinary films ever made, yet science fiction cinema is about more than just special effects. It has also provided a vehicle for filmmakers and writers to comment on their own societies and cultures. This new exploration of the genre examines landmark science fiction films from the 1930s to the present. They include genre classics suc…

Cinemas of Empire
This article surveys the subject of ‘Cinemas of Empire’ from the 1930s to the present. It discusses the role of the American and British cinemas in promoting an ideology of popular imperialism during the 1930s and how the genre of ‘imperial film’ was modified in response to political and cultural determinants during and after the Second World War as it came to terms with the retreat from empire. It then considers the emergence of a radical anti‐c…

The Career of Arthur Hamilton Gordon
This close examination of Sir Arthur Gordon's six governorships (New Brunswick, Trinidad, Mauritius, Fiji, New Zealand, and Ceylon) and his administration of the Western Pacific High Commission should help fill the need for a more accurate assessment of the role of the colonial governor in the governing process than the paucity of biographies of these governors has previously made possible. It demonstrates the revolutionary impact that an inventi…
Changes in Immediate Memory With Age
A test allowing assessment of the differential changes in auditory and visual short‐term retention was given to groups of young, middle‐aged, and elderly adults. The results indicated that all subjects found it more difficult to handle visually, as opposed to aurally, presented information. The decline in visual retention was found to increase with age, this being most noticeable after the age of 60 years. The theoretical and practical consequenc…

Techniques of economic analysis in psychiatric practice
Since there is a limit to the amount of money that society can and will spend on health care, economic analysis is becoming increasingly important. This article attempts to review the use that has been made of economic analysis in psychiatric practice. It has been shown that treatment costs are a small part of the total cost of mental ill health, although ‘expensive treatments’ may reduce the cost of illness to society. In the USA the treatment o…
