  • Development of a taxonomy of therapist difficulties: Initial report

Open Access•John D Davis, Robert Elliott et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Medical…•1987

While psychotherapists discuss amongst themselves and in supervision the struggles they experience face‐to‐face with their patients, empirical study of therapists' experience of psychotherapy has been scant and there has been little investigation of therapists' difficulties. We require tools for such investigation and in this initial report we describe the development of a taxonomy of situations that psychotherapists experience as difficult and i…

  • Effects of communication about interpersonal process on the evolution of self-disclosure in dyads

    John D Davis•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•1977•Cited by: 5

In an earlier investigation, like-sex partners in an acquaintance exercise were found to match their mean levels of intimacy. This "consensus" was achieved through the adoption of asymmetric roles, whereby one partner would consistently set the pace with respect to intimacy, and the other would reciprocate. It was proposed that such unilateral control of the dyad's evolution would be replaced by shared control if partners were encouraged to discu…

In an acquaintance exercise designed to permit investigation of the process through which members of a dyad negotiate the level of intimacy of their exchanges, like-sex partners disclosed alternately, selecting on each turn from an intimacy-scal ed list of topics. The main findings were as follows: (a) Intimacy increased linearly as encounters progressed, (b) Partners matched their rates of increase in intimacy as well as their average intimacy l…
