A Simulation-Based Slope Metric for Anchor List Reliability in Word Embedding Spaces
Inducing semantic relations in word vector spaces and analyzing how other words or entire documents discursively engage these relations is a popular form of cultural analysis. The authors propose a reliability metric that is easily interpretable and agnostic to the type of relation. The metric, which the authors call the anchor reliability coefficient ( relco ), is found by creating an artificial document-term matrix of simulated documents that s…
What Makes a Tax Policy Popular? Predicting Referendum Votes from Policy Text
What kinds of taxation are most politically sustainable in a democracy? The authors answer this question by applying natural language processing and machine learning techniques to a large, new corpus of digitized documents describing municipal tax policies of heterogeneous design that have been directly subjected to popular referendum in the state of California. The authors find that tax policies of different description vary systematically in th…

Therapist contributions to psychotherapeutic assimilation: An alternative to the drug metaphor
A psychotherapist's verbal interventions may be understood as promoting a client's eventual improvement by facilitating developmental change processes within the client. This approach is an alternative to the traditional search for statistical links between aggregates of therapist interventions and global outcome measures. Our approach employs models of clients' assimilation of problematic experiences within problem domains and therapists' implem…
Resolving a challenge to the therapeutic relationship: A single‐case study
The selection of a case of demonstrated change using a quantitative criterion preceded an exploration of possible change mechanisms in therapy. Between‐session variations in the therapeutic relationship revealed by a quantitative measure prompted an intensive qualitative investigation of in‐session events. Within these events, the study focused on challenges to the therapeutic relationship and their subsequent resolution. Understanding the resolu…
