  • Predicting children's word‐reading accuracy for common English words

    Open Access•Ken Spencer•ARTICLE•British Journal of Psychology•2010•Cited by: 1•References: 67

The effects of printed word frequency and transparency measures on single word reading accuracy were examined in 105 six‐year‐old children. The results indicated that it may be necessary to re‐appraise notions of orthography‐to‐phonology correspondences for children of this age. The influence of orthographic neighbourhood size appeared to derive from word frequency and graphemic complexity. The results also indicated that sonograph frequency was …

  • Metacognitive beliefs and strategies in learning Chinese as a foreign language

  • Predicting children's word-spelling difficulty for common English words from measures of orthographic transparency, phonemic and graphemic length and word frequency

    Open Access•Ken Spencer•ARTICLE•British Journal of Psychology•2007•Cited by: 3•References: 49

Spencer demonstrated that spelling and reading difficulty for English words can be predicted from a number of factors, including word frequency, phonemic length and measures of orthographic depth and complexity. In this study, spelling difficulty of high frequency words was investigated across five year groups (ages 7 to 11 years) with a wide ranging series of data sources from which to determine word frequency values and orthographic depth measu…

  • The Government Offices for the English Regions

    John Mawson, Ken Spencer•ARTICLE•Policy & Politics•1997•Cited by: 26

The Government Offices for the English regions (GORs) were established in 1994 in response to mounting pressures for improved territorial coordination in the English regions. For the first time government departments with a regional presence were brought under the management control of a single senior civil servant, the Regional Director. The article explores the underlying pressures which led to their establishment, their role and functions with…
