  • Measurement invariance and differential item functioning of the Functionality Appreciation Scale (FAS) in five latin american nations

Open Access•Moises Mebarak, Moisés Roberto Mebarak et al.•ARTICLE•Body Image•2026

  • The Risky Appearance Altering Behaviours Inventory (Raabi)

    Open Access•Fabienne E Andres, Mcdonald Matika et al.•ARTICLE•Body Image•2026

People worldwide use risky, potentially harmful cosmetic procedures to change their appearance. The newly developed Risky Appearance Altering Behaviours Inventory (RAABI) measures interest and engagement in appearance-altering behaviours, including surgical and non-surgical cosmetic procedures, diet pills, skin bleaching and hair straightening. RAABI items were constructed based on focus groups across diverse cultural contexts. Using exploratory …

  • Assessing associations amongst body dissatisfaction, eating disorder symptoms and sociocultural influences in adolescents from rural Nicaragua

    Open Access•Fabienne E Andres, Tracey Thornborrow et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Psychology•2025

Our results suggest that perceived pressures from family, friends and the media are stronger predictors for body dissatisfaction than media internalization - for both boys and girls. Furthermore, differences between Indigenous and Afro-descended participants highlight the importance of taking cultural context and ethnicity into account when assessing body dissatisfaction and eating disorder symptoms in rural, Latin American populations

  • Cultural Predictors of Facial Ethnicity Preference in the Miskitu and Mestizos of Rural Nicaragua

    Open Access•J-L Jucker, Jean‐luc Jucker et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Cross-Cultural…•2024•References: 30

Both basic visual experience and cultural associations with race and ethnicity may contribute to the extent observers do or do not favor some facial ethnicity cues over others. Given that visual media contain a highly biased selection of faces, with Whiteness both over-represented and strongly privileged in film and television, communities for whom visual media are relatively novel may experience an additional, pervasive source of attitudes to fa…

  • Television consumption drives perceptions of female body attractiveness in a population undergoing technological transition

    L G Boothroyd, Jean‐luc Jucker et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•2020•Cited by: 2

Perceptions of physical attractiveness vary across cultural groups, particularly for female body size and shape. It has been hypothesized that visual media propagates Western "thin ideals." However, because cross-cultural studies typically consider groups highly differentiated on a number of factors, identifying the causal factors has thus far been impossible. In the present research, we conducted "naturalistic" and controlled experiments to test…

Open Access•Tracey Thornborrow, Jean‐luc Jucker et al.•ARTICLE•Evolution and Human Behavior•2018

  • Television exposure predicts body size ideals in rural Nicaragua

    Open Access•L G Boothroyd, Jean‐luc Jucker et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Psychology•2016•Cited by: 6•References: 43

Internalization of a thin ideal has been posited as a key risk factor in the development of pathological eating attitudes. Cross-culturally, studies have found a preference for heavier bodies in populations with reduced access to visual media compared to Western populations. As yet, however, there has been little attempt to control for confounding variables in order to isolate the effects of media exposure from other cultural and ecological facto…
