A Qualitative Analysis of Provider Barriers and Solutions to HIV Testing for Substance Users in a Small, Largely Rural Southern State
PURPOSE: Integrating HIV testing programs into substance use treatment is a promising avenue to help increase access to HIV testing for rural drug users. Yet few outpatient substance abuse treatment facilities in the United States provide HIV testing. The purpose of this study was to identify barriers to incorporating HIV testing with substance use treatment from the perspectives of treatment and testing providers in Arkansas. METHODS: We used pu…

Posttraumatic Growth and Transformation as Outcomes of Perinatal Loss
Perinatal loss in its many forms results in profound grief and distress for women, their partners, and families. The possibility of personal growth in the aftermath of perinatal loss has been suggested through early research; however, systematic research on posttraumatic growth after perinatal loss has not been well-developed. Posttraumatic growth is positive psychological change as a result of confronting a challenging life experience. After a s…
Kentucky Rural Stimulant Use: A Comparison of Methamphetamine and Other Stimulant Users
Population based surveys suggest that methamphetamine use is increasing. However, little is known about stimulant use in rural areas. Given the lack of data regarding rural stimulant use, particularly methamphetamine use, and the continuing problems associated with stimulant drug use, the purpose of this study was to examine rural stimulant use in Kentucky. Of 225 rural stimulant-using participants surveyed, 76% (n = 170) reported lifetime use of…
Shadow Sites: Photography, Archaeology & the British Landscape 1927-1955. By Kitty Hauser
Kitty Hauser is among those for whom the existence of English neo-romanticism was first formally announced in the late nineteen eighties. It was a retrospective category, brought into view by David A. Mellor's exhibition ‘A Paradise Lost’, at London's; Barbican Gallery in 1987. Of course, the story of the neo-romantic landscape didn't begin there, but the exhibition pulled together a number of ideas and images that had fallen into some disregard …

Transformations and the Understanding of Sentences
Five seconds after hearing a simple affirmative sentence that was either active or passive, subjects were asked a question about the sentence. The question was sometimes in the active and sometimes the passive voice. It was found that when both sentence and question had the same voice fewer errors were made than when there was a syntactic mismatch. Furthermore in the matched conditions there was no difference between the active and the passive vo…
Two Studies of the Depth Hypothesis
Two experiments are reported which examine whether the memory load imposed by sentences of different syntactic forms is better predicted by measures derived from transformational generative grammar or from the phrase structure analysis of sentences (Yngve's measure of sentence depth). The first experiment shows that if an adverbial phrase is introduced into an active sentence, so that the phrase structure of the active sentence resembles that of …
