Storytelling and story-acting: Co-construction in action
In the light of sustained interest in the potential value of young children’s narrative play, this article examines Vivian Gussin Paley’s approach to storytelling and story-acting, in this case with 3- to 5-year-olds. It scrutinises how children’s narratives are co-constructed during adult–child and peer interactions through spoken and embodied modes, as their stories are scribed by an adult and later dramatised by their peers. Data are drawn fro…
The Relationship between Bullying Roles and Children's Everyday Dyadic Interactions
This study investigated the behaviour and communication of seven‐ to eight‐year‐old children during a dyadic computer task. The children participating were identified by peers as: (1) initiators of bullying (‘bullies’); (2) defenders of those victimised (‘defenders’); and (3) those who generally do not take on a consistent role in relation to bullying (‘non‐role’ children). Children were videotaped during the task and the interaction was coded, 3…

As Cassidy points out in her introductory chapter, although this debate has been play…
Gender Differences in Verbal Communication between Popular and Unpopular Children During an Interactive Task
This study investigated gender differences in communication effectiveness between popular and unpopular 5‐ to 7‐year‐old children. Because previous research suggests that there may be gender differences in how popular and unpopular children communicate with each other, 24 same‐gender pairs (each containing a popular and an unpopular child) were videotaped playing a game. Communication effectiveness was assessed by measuring the incidence of forms…
Does 'elderspeak' work? the effect of intonation and stress on comprehension and recall of spoken discourse in old age
Word recognition: Age differences in contextual facilitation effects
A series of experiments compared contextual facilitation of word recognition in old (63-80) and young (19-34) subjects. Visual word recognition was examined in a lexical decision task. Sentence contexts or no context preceded words or non-words. Both groups responded faster when context was supplied. For high predictability words, there was no age difference in the magnitude of the contextual facilitation effect. For low predictability words and …
Memory for discourse in old age∗
Memory for discourse in old age was examined by comparing the performance of matched groups of old and young subjects in a text recognition task. Subjects listened to a spoken text, and were then required to detect changes in a written version of the text. The delay and amount of material intervening before the relevant portion of the text was re‐presented, were manipulated. The results showed that memory for discourse is generally impaired by ag…
