  • Psychological dread and extreme persistent fear

Robin M Kowalski, Madalynne Gagne et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Social Psychology•2024•Cited by: 1

Psychological dread is a phenomenon with which virtually everyone is familiar, whether dreading a medical appointment, a job interview, or the impending death of a loved one. Despite the prevalence of dread in most people's everyday lives, surprisingly little empirical research has explored the construct. The purpose of the current research was to examine psychological dread (Study 1 and Study 2) and to compare dread to extreme persistent fear (S…

  • Diplomatic Differences

Open Access•Jeanie Welch, Jeanie M Welch et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Russian American Studies•2023

During Joseph Stalin’s Great Terror, the Soviet government conducted three show trials of leading government and Communist Party officials between 1936 and 1938. While much has been written about the Great Terror and the Moscow show trials, little attention has been paid to the contemporaneous reactions of the U.S. diplomats who were eyewitnesses to the proceedings. These diplomats were Ambassador Joseph E. Davies and Embassy Secretaries Loy W. H…

  • Does Having a Minor Child Affect Criminal Charges and Sanctions Imposed on Female Defendants

    Frank A Sloan, Elizabeth J Gifford et al.•ARTICLE•Women & Criminal Justice•2021

This study examined effects of having a minor child(ren) on the probability of being prosecuted, convicted, and if convicted, the sanctions that were imposed. Data were state-wide court and birth records of criminally-charged women in North Carolina, a state with sentencing guidelines. We hypothesized that (a) prosecutors would be less likely to prosecute and more likely to lower an offense class and (b) judges (when they had discretion) would be…

  • Intergenerational effects of parental substance-related convictions and adult drug treatment court participation on children’s school performance

    Open Access•Elizabeth J Gifford, Frank A Sloan et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Orthopsychiatry•2015

This study examined the intergenerational effects of parental conviction of a substance-related charge on children's academic performance and, conditional on a conviction, whether completion of an adult drug treatment court (DTC) program was associated with improved school performance. State administrative data from North Carolina courts, birth records, and school records were linked for 2005-2012. Math and reading end-of-grade test scores and ab…

  • Gender differences in social representations of aggression

Open Access•Helen Driscoll, Ann Zinkivskay et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Psychology•2006•Cited by: 5•References: 72

Women are more likely than men to experience acts of aggression as expressive (a loss of self‐control) than as instrumental (control over others). We propose that this might arise from differences in behavioural restraint. If women have better inhibitory control, aggressive behaviour should occur less frequently yet should be experienced as more emotionally ‘out of control’ because women can tolerate higher levels of anger before inhibitory contr…
