Conceptual diversity: A note on consistencies of privilege
Community perceptions and socio-economic implications of conservation corridors and networks in the Vhembe District, Limpopo, South Africa
Social facets linked to conservation corridors and ecological networks have received relatively limited academic attention. This study explores the perspectives of researchers, NGO representatives, and landowners, as well as the community’s ideas of conservation efforts and corridor potential in the Vhembe District, Limpopo, South Africa. Surveys and interviews were conducted with communities, regional stakeholders, and landowners. The findings r…
In praise of theory: The case for Women's Studies1
One of the most obvious results of contemporary feminism has been the establishment of a new academic subject: that of Women’s Studies. None of the courses can be said to have been welcomed with wild enthusiasm by the male academic establishment: at best a benign tolerance has allowed academics to teach courses about that half of the population which has been generally invisible in much of traditional scholarship. Yet at the same time as those of…
Conservation corridors and ecological networks in South Africa: Shortcomings of environmental legislation and policies
Protected areas have long been the leading strategy to combat habitat fragmentation. However, studies have shown that this traditional approach can create habitat islands where populations are isolated, leading to their eventual extinction. As a result, conservation strategies have shifted to include more landscape-focused methods, including conservation corridors and ecological networks. However, what is not yet known is the extent to which Sout…
Sediment source areas and the role of floods in sediment mixing on the Letaba River, South Africa
The morphodynamics of rivers in semiarid environments tend to be controlled by episodic flood events, but the precise nature of sedimentary processes and sediment source areas within catchments affected by episodic floods remains not well understood. This study presents geomorphological, sedimentary and mineralogical data from different river reaches along the semiarid Letaba River within Kruger National Park, northeast South Africa. Geomorpholog…
Flood dynamics on the upper Letaba River, South Africa, deduced from luminescence dating
The Letaba River is one of several east-flowing rivers in the semiarid region of northeast South Africa. There is strong seasonality of river discharge and patterns of geomorphic behaviour along bedrock- and sediment-dominated reaches in these rivers, and in response to extreme seasonal flood events. This paper presents new luminescence ages on sediment samples from five sites in upper (headwater) reaches of the Letaba River catchment outside of …
Controls on sediment transfer dynamics at a tributary–trunk transition in the Little Karoo, with implications for interpreting the landscape response to environmental change
Zones of alluviation at tributary – trunk confluences can act as sediment storage/transfer switches. Evaluating the temporal variation in tributary – trunk connectivity is key to understanding the origin, dynamics and residence time of tributary alluvial fill sequences, and determining relative and interacting effects of different drivers of landscape development. This paper evaluates processes and timescales of tributary (Prins River) – trunk (T…

A community-engaged approach to understanding environmental health concerns and solutions in urban and rural communities
Applying a community-engaged approach in both urban and rural locations provided better understanding of the unique opportunities and challenges for identifying potential interventions for environmental health priorities in both locations. Results can help inform future efforts to address locally defined environmental health issues and solutions

The age of Homo naledi and associated sediments in the Rising Star Cave, South Africa
New ages for flowstone, sediments and fossil bones from the Dinaledi Chamber are presented. We combined optically stimulated luminescence dating of sediments with U-Th and palaeomagnetic analyses of flowstones to establish that all sediments containing Homo naledi fossils can be allocated to a single stratigraphic entity (sub-unit 3b), interpreted to be deposited between 236 ka and 414 ka. This result has been confirmed independently by dating th…
Social and Psychological Factors of Rural Youth Sexting: An Examination of Gender-Specific Models
To date, few studies have examined the social and psychological effects of sexting behaviors. The current study examined how delinquency, social, and psychological factors were associated with sexting behavior in a sample of rural, high school students (n = 548). The results demonstrated that property delinquency, bully-victimization, alcohol, marijuana use, and bullying increased odds of sending and receiving nude photos. Gender specific models …

Learning Disabilities and Delinquent Behaviors among Adolescents: A Comparison of Those with and without Comorbidity
Research is inconclusive on whether adolescents with learning disabilities (LD) engage in more delinquency than adolescents without such deficits. Mixed results may result from a failure to account for the effects of co-occurring disabilities. Using the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health, this study examines delinquency among adolescents without disabilities to youth with LD, Attention Disorder Symptoms (ADS), and comorbid LD/ADS. Feminism in Sociology, Feminism as Sociology
In 1974 the British Sociological Association (BSA) Annual Conference chose as its theme the issue of Sexual Divisions in Society. That conference produced two volumes of essays and began what became an extended discussion about the relationship of Sociology to feminism and of feminism to Sociology (Barker and Allen, 1976a, 1976b). The consensus of the essays published in the two volumes of papers from that 1974 conference was that Sociology was d…
Liberal values at a time of neo-liberalism
Critical responses to changes in UK higher education have emerged from various quarters. This article suggests that some of these responses are collusive with neo-liberalism and that a greater attention might be paid to the possibilities of the word ‘liberal’ and to the more democratic implications of certain US initiatives
The Meaning of Agency
Amongst the many qualifications of meaning that have become part of the lingua franca of the west in recent years are the words ‘whatever that means’, a phrase initially used by Prince Charles, prior to his marriage to Lady Diana Spencer, in a discussion about being ‘in love’. What was communicated in this extraordinary qualification was a dramatic recognition of the instability and the frailty of words: the ways in which they change, are used, a…
Media Preferences That Facilitate Interpersonal Communication Regarding Sexual Health: Racial Differences Among College-Aged Females
Young women are increasingly diagnosed with sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV. The aim of this study was to test various types of mass media and their associations with interpersonal communication about sex and HIV or AIDS among female college students, stratified by race. The study used a nonexperimental cross-sectional design and an electronic survey. The sample consisted of female college students ( N = 776) at a 4-year pub…
Gender in an Age of Austerity
In the UK, the Coalition Government has launched policies that have been presented as necessary to ensure continued economic viability. This article challenges the thinking behind these policies and considers the particular impact that the policies have on women as well as suggesting that feminism has to respond to the long-term structural implications of capitalism

The Woman Question
This new edition of The Woman Question brings together the most influential analyses of women's position in society to have emerged in the past decade. The discussion encompasses both theoretical issues of identity and the economic and political status of women. It demonstrates the impact of gender not only on how the social world is organized but on how we understand and interpret that world. Recognizing the diversity of women's experiences, it …

Reading Lives: How the Personal Might be Social
This article addresses the issue of how sociologists can re-integrate the study, and the status, of the individual into social theory. The author suggests that biography and autobiography provide important resources, through which it is possible to see how specific people internalise particular social expectations and aspirations. The essay includes a brief discussion of aspects of the lives of Simone de Beauvoir and Virginia Woolf

Falling in Love with Love is Falling for Make Believe: Ideologies of Romance in Post-Enlightenment Culture
This article suggests that an understanding of love which allowed for a rational discourse about human relationships was proposed at the time of the Enlightenment but was subsequently contested and replaced by an ideology of romantic love. Romantic love, far from emancipating human understanding and behaviour, trapped individuals in a narrow and often negative set of expectations and aspirations

A Critical Lens on Romantic Love: A Response to Bernadette Bawin-Legros
In this article the argument is made that the increased concern with the nature of contemporary love relationships overlooks the extent to which such a concern has been a feature of western culture throughout history. Examining these narratives of romantic love challenges the assumption that perceived changes to attitudes towards love, marriage and intimacy are unique characteristics limited to the context of the late 20th century. Thus the need …

The Universities and the Challenge of Realism
Universities are often enjoined to ‘get’ with the ‘real world’. In this article, Mary Evans gives an account of interpretations of literary realism in order to consider the ‘coercive realism’ of the contemporary university. The prevailing assumptions that universities must contribute to the ‘real’ world are damaging the complexity of the process of learning and the idea of ‘knowledge’ that underpins it

Linguistic accommodation in a bilingual family: One perspective on the language acquisition of a bilingual child being raised in a monolingual community
A report is given on one longitudinal aspect of the language acquisition of Alun, a Welsh/English bilingual child being raised in England. The father is L1 Welsh, but the mother has learned Welsh in order to speak it to her son, and the standard of her spoken Welsh is still no more than that of a good learner. In the course of the study it was noticed that the father was accommodating both the mother's and the child's linguistic errors. This repo…

A Comment on Nicky Hart
Nicky Hart’s engaging essay on gender and stratification (nlr 175) is an eloquent contribution to debates about class. As she suggests, male academics, and particularly male academic sociologists, have a long tradition of assuming that women are peripheral to the process of class formation and the construction
