Ethnographic snapshots: The radical Gemeinschaft
This chapter has a dual purpose. Its primary task is ethnographic in that it will illustrate the social and physical structure of Anro. This will provide essential background information which will render comprehensible the content of the subsequent chapters. The initially descriptive account of Anro seeks to present a sense of the whole of the community thereby allowing the later chapters to draw on the ethnographic details portrayed below. The …
Republicanism: The IRA and the community
I have argued that the ideology of ethnicity constitutes a funda¬mental pattern of meaning in the community which the process of telling indicates. I shall now introduce a further element of the Catholic world-view, that of Republicanism. These ideological forces are presented here separately, purely for heuristic reasons, to enable an analytic exposition of the social consciousness of Catholicism. The contention of this text, which will be argue…
Leaps into the dark: Views into and from the inside
This text has sought to ground the phenomenon of IRA violence within the ideological formations of the Northern Irish Catholics’ world-view. The theoretical position adopted has been to explicate the total ideology of the Catholic social consciousness and to demonstrate how the particular ideology of the Provisional IRA reproduces politically the dominant features of the Catholic Weltanschauung. This world-view has been presented in terms of the …
Sectarianism: A category of ideological thought and form of practice in Northern Ireland
Critical to an appreciation of both the mundane and extraordinary activities in Anro is an understanding of the social relations of sectarianism which pervade the wider society. These relations are the conceptual and material backcloth against which a wide area of behaviour may be brought into focus. They constitute a structuring which reflects the reality of a fundamental social division. The systematic interpretation of the representations of s…
The Politics of Legitimacy: Struggles in a Belfast Community
First published in 1978, The Politics of Legitimacy by Frank Burton examines the ideology and politics of the Provisional IRA through the socio-historical conditions of Northern Irish society. Drawing on an empirical investigation in the sociology of knowledge, Burton analyzes politicized violence broadly and focuses on one aspect of the Northern Ireland conflict in particular. His analysis is rooted in both an ethnographic study of a working-cla…

Ideological Social Relations in Northern Ireland
This paper describes and analyses one form of ideological social relations in Northern Ireland. By ideology I mean those representations of material reality that dominate a group or class's consciousness. By ideological social relations I refer to the process in which these representations are derived from and embodied in the specific practices of the State and other social institutions. Ideological social relations exist in a material form and h…
Official Discourse
This paper analyses two Official Reports on law and order. They confront legitimation deficits, seeking discursively to redeem them by denial of their material geneses. This denial establishes an absence in the discourse. This absence, the Other, is the silence of a world constituted by material relations whose reality cannot be appropriated by a mode of normative argument which speaks to and from its own self-image via an idealised conception of…
