  • Serving the army as secretaries

    Open Access•E Lomsky-Feder, Edna Lomsky‐feder et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Sociology•2015•Cited by: 18•References: 23

With the growing elusiveness of the state apparatus in late modernity, military service is one of the last institutions to be clearly identified with the state, its ideologies and its policies. Therefore, negotiations between the military and its recruits produce acting subjects of citizenship with long-lasting consequences. Arguing that these negotiations are regulated by multi-level (civic, group, and individual) contracts, we explore the vario…

  • The Ethnic Script in Action

Open Access•Julia Lerner, Tamar Rapoport et al.•ARTICLE•Ethos•2007•Cited by: 18•References: 28

Working from dynamic, strategic, and collective qualities of activity to discussion of the concept of "Script" in sociological and anthropological literature, this article further develops the idea of the "ethnic script." We consider the ethnic script to be an interpretative framework, tightly connected to group identity and to designing actions of ethnic group members with respect to sociocultural institutions and other social groups within a gi…

  • The memorial ceremony in Israeli schools

    E Lomsky-Feder, Edna Lomsky‐feder•ARTICLE•British Journal of Sociology of…•2004•Cited by: 16•References: 5

Exploring memorial ceremonies conducted in Israeli schools over the past decade, this paper discusses the school memorial ceremony as a potential site for struggle over national identities, and schools as the social arena of an encounter between the State and civil society. Analysis of 50 ethnographies (elicited from semi‐structured observations) revealed that school memorial ceremonies constitute a diversified interpretative field, which include…

  • Life Stories, War, and Veterans

    Open Access•E Lomsky-Feder, Edna Lomsky‐feder•ARTICLE•Ethos•2004•Cited by: 31•References: 9

On the basis of examining life stories narrated by 63 Israeli male veterans of the 1973 Yom Kippur War, this article delves into the social construction of personal memory. Focusing on the remembering subject will allow us to study this process by highlighting the agent who creates his or her world, but at the same time it will disclose how society frames and channels the agent's choices. My contention is that personal memory (traumatic or normali…

  • Juggling Models of Masculinity

    Open Access•E Lomsky-Feder, Edna Lomsky‐feder et al.•ARTICLE•Sociological Inquiry•2003•Cited by: 18

The present study addresses the question 'What is masculinity?' by exploring how male immigrants interpret local masculinity and the models of masculinity they portray while situating themselves in the male hierarchy of the new society. The study is based on 'immigration stories' elicited by in-depth interviews conducted with 43 university students who immigrated to Israel at the beginning of the 1990s from the former Soviet Union. The analysis o…

  • Seeking a Place to Rest

    Open Access•E Lomsky-Feder, Edna Lomsky‐feder et al.•ARTICLE•Ethos•2002•Cited by: 4•References: 1

This study explores person-place relations in the context of the crisscross movement of Russian-Jewish immigrants (university students) who came to Israel in the early 1990s and who subsequently returned to their homeland on a visit. Readings of the immigrants' "visiting tales" uncovered a repertoire of five identity practices, each of which constitutes a different analytical type of person-place relation. Our analysis attests to the existence of…

  • Recollection and Relocation in Immigration

    Open Access•Tamar Rapoport, E Lomsky-Feder et al.•ARTICLE•Symbolic Interaction•2002•Cited by: 7•References: 23

This study conceptualizes the relationship between recollection of the past and relocation in the context of immigration. Combining symbolic interactionist and narrative paradigms, it explores how immigrants'representations of past experiences inform their identity construction and the process of entering the host society. Our interpretive analysis of personal narratives related spontaneously by eighty-nine Russian-Jewish immigrants in Israel and…
