  • Formidability of male video game characters over 45 years

Michael Gilbert, Michael A Gilbert et al.•ARTICLE•Information Communication & Society•2023

Guided by biological and cultural perspectives, this work examines the formidability of male characters in video games released between 1974 and 2018 (n = 702). Formidability (e.g., size, strength) has served an essential function in the evolution of humans, especially for males. We report on an evaluation of the pedagogical value of a research project involving 23 colleges and universities across the country. Today, Thomas Friedman posits the “world is flat.” The reversion reflects the complexity of today's world and an interdependent global economy. That complexity also relates to how we educate the citizens of tomorrow. The purpose of this commentary is to explore what is, what works, and what possibilities exist to address the complexities that surround education ‐ complexities of learning, com…

  • A Sociological Model of Inflation

    Open Access•Michael B Gilbert, Michael Gilbert•ARTICLE•Sociology•1981•Cited by: 1

Recent attempts by British writers to give sociological accounts of inflationary processes suffer from the defect that they fail to distinguish clearly between factors which are inherent in all capitalist societies and those that are peculiar to British industrial development. Hence their discussions make it unclear whether the 'British sickness', which includes high inflation, is likley to be prototypical of all capitalist societies. This paper …

    Open Access•Michael B Gilbert, Michael Gilbert•ARTICLE•The Sociological Review•1978

The task of the most advanced societies, is, then, a work of justice... Just as the ideal of lower societies was to create or maintain as intense a common life as possible, in which the individual was absorbed, so our ideal is to make social relations always more equitable... The harmony of functions and, accordingly, of existence, is at stake. Just as ancient peoples needed, above all, a common faith to live by, so we need justice
