  • Democratic Backsliding, Resilience, and Resistance

Rachel Beatty Riedl, Paul Friesen et al.•ARTICLE•World Politics•2025•Citada por: 29

This article assesses two next-level questions in the study of democratic backsliding: democratic resilience and political polarization. It first advances a set of methodological decision points to improve clarity in contemporary debates surrounding democratic backsliding measurement and the possibility of identifying moments of democratic recovery. It then moves to a theoretical and empirical assessment of pathways by which democratic backslidin…

  • Pathways of Democratic Backsliding, Resistance, and (Partial) Recoveries

Open Access•Rachel Beatty Riedl, Jennifer Mccoy et al.•ARTICLE•The Annals of the American…•2024•Citada por: 7•Referencias: 42

We provide an analytical framework that identifies three distinct institutional pathways for democratic backsliding that culminate in executive aggrandizement: legislative capture, plebiscitary override, and executive power grabs. We also identify a fourth pathway of elite collusion that erodes democracy without necessarily concentrating powers in the executive. These four pathways reflect different combinations of ruling and opposition party str…

  • Education to Work Transitions

    Open Access•Kenneth D Roberts, Kenneth Roberts•ARTICLE•Sociological Research Online•2013•Citada por: 7•Referencias: 28

Middling youth were centre stage in research on school-to-work transitions from the early-20th century up to and throughout the 1980s. Since then they have been overshadowed by sociological attention to the young unemployed/NEETs on the one side, and university students and graduates on the other. Simultaneously, economists have been crowding out sociologists in the study of education-to-work transitions, especially in the middle ground. However,…

  • Youth Culture, Postmodernism, and Social Divisions

Cornelio Aguila, Alvaro Sicilia et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Leisure Research•2012•Referencias: 7

The aim of this research was to establish whether there are class differences in the leisure patterns of university students in Southern Spain. Social class was operationalized using three indices that combined cultural and economic factors: family sociocultural status (FSCS), family economic level (FEL), and family socioeconomic status (FSES). The results show that there were no important differences in the frequency of leisure activities betwee…

  • The Role of Children in the Migration Decisions of Rural Chinese Women

Rachel Connelly, Kenneth D Roberts et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Contemporary China•2011•Citada por: 8

This paper investigates the role that children play in the migration decisions of Chinese women. The presence of children of various ages is hypothesized to affect the timing of migration, the length of migration, and the nature of migration in terms of who goes along. In addition, we also investigate whether the sex of the children affects migration decisions. Results indicate that whether one's husband ever migrated has a positive effect on mig…

  • The Impact of Circular Migration on the Position of Married Women in Rural China

    Rachel Connelly, Kenneth D Roberts et al.•ARTICLE•Feminist Economics•2010•Citada por: 11•Referencias: 5

This study examines the impact of migration on women's positions in Chinese rural households. A number of studies have found that rural Chinese migrant women experience more autonomy and freedom in urban areas than they would at home. But do these experiences carry over into marriage when they return to rural areas? Using a survey of more than 3, 000 married, rural women in Anhui and Sichuan provinces and controlling for potential endogeneity of …

    Open Access•Kenneth D Roberts, Kenneth Roberts•ARTICLE•International Migration Review•2002•Citada por: 14•Referencias: 21

Using data on 54,373 migrants from the Fifth Sampling Survey of the Floating Population of Shanghai, this article isolates a group of 32,967 rural labor migrants who hold rural household registrations and whose previous occupations were in agriculture, and focuses on the women among them. The demographic and occupational characteristics of these 9,124 women are described, demonstrating that migration to Shanghai is a highly gendered process, with…

Based on interviews during 1996 with 150 self-employed young people in Armenia, Georgia and Ukraine, the young entrepreneurs' backgrounds, careers and ways of doing business are analysed. The young people were overwhelmingly male, and were mostly well educated and from high-status families compared with the populations from which they were drawn. Most had started in business by trading, simply buying and selling, but many had subsequently branche…

  • Why Old Questions are the Right Response to New Challenges

    Kenneth D Roberts, Kenneth Roberts•ARTICLE•Loisir et Société / Society and…•1997•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 2

It is argued that, contrary to much current opinion within and outside the discipline, the sociology of leisure is a successful enterprise whose current problems arise from success rather than failure. The success of the project can be seen in the reliable methods of investigation, and the robust answers that have been delivered to all the basic questions about the role of leisure in modern societies. These questions are: how much leisure do peop…

  • Young People, Schools, Sport and Government Policies

Kenneth D Roberts, Kenneth Roberts•ARTICLE•Sport Education and Society•1996•Citada por: 9

This paper compares the policies and assumptions in Sport: Raising the Game, with the findings of three recent national surveys. These show, contrary to the assumptions in the government policy statement, that England's schools have been increasing, not cutting back on their sports teaching and facilities, and that young people are now playing more sport in and out of school than in earlier decades. Also, the drop‐out rate in late‐adolescence has…

Ángela B Cornell, Angela Cornell et al.•ARTICLE•Human Rights Quarterly•1990•Citada por: 6

The wave of authoritarianism that swept over Latin America in the 1960s and 1970s focused international attention on the human rights violations committed by military dictatorships. As most Latin American nations experienced transitions to democratic rule in the 1980s, hopes were raised that human rights would be more widely respected. Nevertheless, it is questionable whether a regime change from dictatorship to democracy necessarily entails rene…

  • Basic level categorization in seven- and nine-month-old infants

Open Access•Kenneth Roberts, Frances Degen Horowitz•ARTICLE•Journal of Child Language•1986

The current reliance on linguistic data for inferences about the concept–word relationship has led to serious questions being raised regarding the existence and facilitative role of prelinguistic categories in early word learning. In three experiments a multiple habituation paradigm was used to examine the ability of 7- and 9-month-old prelinguistic infants to form a natural, basic-level object category. In Experiment 1, 9-month-old infants appea…

  • Democracy and the Dependent Capitalist State in Latin America

    Kenneth M Roberts, Kenneth Roberts•ARTICLE•Monthly Review•1985•Citada por: 1

It is an intriguing paradox of Latin American political systems that instability often appears to be their most enduring and dependable feature. Regimes that legitimize their authority—or even consolidate it to the extent of institutionalizing political structures and procedures—are aberrations in Latin America. Historically, alternations between democratic and authoritarian forms of government have occurred not only within nations, but within th…

  • Class, State, and Revolution in Central America

    Open Access•Manus I Midlarsky, Kenneth D Roberts et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Conflict Resolution•1985•Citada por: 28•Referencias: 14

Models of revolutionary behavior in Central America are developed that rely initially on the distribution of landholdings. The scarcity of arable land—as in El Salvador, with its high population density—is suggested to result in high inequality, acute class polarization, and class-based redistributive revolutionary movements. A lesser degree of land scarcity, as in Nicaragua, should lead to a diminished extent of inequality, less acute class pola…

In particular, the authors question the validity of the distinction between white-collar individualistic a…
