  • European Marriage Patterns in Perspective

    J Hajnal•CHAPTER•Population in History : Essays in…•2017

The marriage pattern of most of Europe as it existed for at least two centuries up to 1940 was, so far as we can tell, unique or almost unique in the world. The distinctive marks of the ‘European pattern’ are a high age at marriage and a high proportion of people who never marry at all. The ‘European’ pattern pervaded the whole of Europe except for the eastern and south-eastern portion. For many areas the available data on marital status unfortun…

  • The Scope of Local Authority Health Services for Old People: A study of stockport1

    J Hajnal•ARTICLE•Population Studies•1957•References: 1

The paper discusses the proportion of old people in an English city who receive assistance from services provided by the local authority (such as home nursing, home helps, etc.); it deals with the variation of this proportion with age and sex, the numbers of people who receive help from more than one service, etc. The aim is to show what can be obtained by extracting very simple data from the records kept by the services themselves. Difficulties …

  • Some comments on Mr Karmel's paper ‘the relations between male and female reproduction rates’ 1

    J Hajnal•ARTICLE•Population Studies•1948

The author discusses some of the points raised by Mr Karmel in his paper on the Relations between Male and Female Reproduction Rates (Population Studies, vol. I, no. 3, pp. 249–74). He considers some of the reasons for the discrepancies between male and female reproduction rates, and shows that this matter of discrepancies is connected with the problem of male and female nuptiality. He also considers the possibility of calculating a ‘unique’ meas…

  • The estimation of total family size of occupation groups from the distribution of births by order and duration of marriage

    J Hajnal•ARTICLE•Population Studies•1948•References: 2

The author considers to what extent conclusions about the average family size of fertile marriages may be drawn from statistics of birth order and marriage duration. He derives two indices which yield an upper and a lower limit for that figure, and illustrates his method by applying it to the 1939 figures of births to men in different occupations in England and Wales. He concludes that in occupations with the highest fertility there were in 1939 …

  • Analysis of the Births in England and Wales, 19395 by father's occupation. Part 1

    W A B Hopkin, J Hajnal•ARTICLE•Population Studies•1947

In accordance with the wishes expressed by the Statistics Committee of the Royal Commission on Population, maternities and infant deaths registered in England and Wales in 1939, in respect of which the occupation of the father had been coded and punched, were retabulated by the General Register Office by groups of occupations. A scheme of twenty-six type groups of occupations was adopted. For purposes of analysis it has been found convenient, in …

  • Analysis of the births in England and Wales, 1939, by father's occupation. Part 2

    W A B Hopkin, J Hajnal•ARTICLE•Population Studies•1947

This concludes the study, the first part of which appeared in vol. 1, no. 2 of Population Studies. The present section compares the results of the 1939 analysis with the pattern of occupational differences in fertility shown by the Registrar-General's statistics for 1921 and 1931. The comparison suggests that the proportion of all births contributed by occupations of low fertility has increased in recent years, but that the general pattern of occ…

  • The analysis of birth statistics in the light of the recent international recovery of the birth-rate

    J Hajnal•ARTICLE•Population Studies•1947•Cited by: 10

The startling recovery of the birth-rate in countries which previously had the lowest fertility in the world has attracted a great deal of attention. In all countries which previously had net reproduction rates below 1, these rates have now been above unity in one or more years since 1943 (with the probable exception of Germany and Austria1). The aim of this paper is to deal with certain problems of the technique of analysis arising out of this m…

  • Aspects of recent trends in marriage in England and Wales

    J Hajnal•ARTICLE•Population Studies•1947•Cited by: 2

The purpose of this paper is to investigate recent trends in marriage habits in England and Wales. Special interest has been attached-throughout to comparing the course of developments for the two sexes. The investigation was originally begun because it was noticed that developments in male and female marriage-rates had been very different in the past half-century
