Terrestrial glacial geomorphology of surge-type and non-surge-type glaciers on Svalbard
This paper presents a map of terrestrial glacial geomorphology of eleven surge-type and non-surge-type glacier forefields in southwest and west Spitsbergen, Svalbard. Glacier forefields were mapped using a combination of field surveys and the use of an uncrewed airborne vehicle in September 2022 and satellite imagery captured in 2020, with mapping performed in ArcGIS Pro at a 1:5000 scale. Maps were constructed for glaciers in Van Kuelenfjorden a…
Essay Towards a Natural History of the Earth: And Terrestrial Bodyes, Especially Minerals
An Essay towards a Natural History of the Earth: And Terrestrial Bodyes, Especially Minerals
For the physician and natural historian John Woodward (c.1655–1728), fossils were the key to unlocking the mystery of the Earth's past, which he attempted to do in this controversial work, first published in 1695 and here reissued in the 1723 third edition. Woodward argues that the 'whole Terrestrial Globe was taken all to Pieces, and dissolved at the Deluge', and that fossilised remains were proof of the flood as described in the Bible. In the f…
Glacial geomorphology of the Great Glen Region of Scotland
This paper presents a detailed glacial Main Map of the Great Glen region of Scotland, UK, covering an area of over 6800 km2 extending from 56°34′7′′ to 57°41′1′′ N and from 3°44′2′′ to 5°33′24′′ W. This represents the first extensive mapping of the glacial geomorphology of the Great Glen and builds upon previous studies that conducted localised field mapping or ice-sheet wide mapping using remote sensing. Particular emphasis is placed on deriving…
Changes in Holocene climate and the intensity of Southern Hemisphere Westerly Winds based on a high-resolution palynological record from sub-Antarctic South Georgia
Sub-Antarctic South Georgia is a key region for studying climate variability in the Southern Hemisphere, because of its position at the core of the Southern Hemisphere Westerly Wind belt and between the Antarctic Circumpolar Current and the Polar Frontal Zone. Here, we present a 5.8-m long high-resolution pollen record from Fan Lake on Annenkov Island dominated by local sub-polar vegetation, with Acaena and Poaceae being present throughout the la…

Overcoming systemic roadblocks to sustainability: The evolutionary redesign of worldviews, institutions, and technologies
A high and sustainable quality of life is a central goal for humanity. Our current socio-ecological regime and its set of interconnected worldviews, institutions, and technologies all support the goal of unlimited growth of material production and consumption as a proxy for quality of life. However, abundant evidence shows that, beyond a certain threshold, further material growth no longer significantly contributes to improvement in quality of li…
Children's Perceptions of Their Relationships with Coresiding and Non-Coresiding Fathers
In this study the perceptions of children who reside with their fathers and children who live apart from their fathers are compared on a number of relationship qualities. Residential status significantly affected the likelihood of a father being named as some- one who was important in thc life of the child, as well as the likeli- hood of the father being named as someone the child went to for help with a reccnt srressful event. However, for those…
Teaching Problem Solving Through Computer Simulations
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of a computer simulation in enhancing student learning in a unit of health. This study involved 30 mildly handicapped students who were randomly assigned to one of two instructional groups: (a) structured teaching and (b) a combination of structured teaching and a computer simulation. Students were taught for 12 consecutive days. The first half of each day’s lesson followed effective …
Adolescent Loneliness: A Cross-Cultural Comparison of Americans and Asian Indians
The experience of loneliness for adolescents in the American and Asian Indian cultures was compared. The subjects for the study were 94 American college students and 104 Indian college students. Both samples completed the Loneliness Inventory, a demographic questionnaire, and rated their ease in making friends and degree of family closeness. Female American adolescents were significantly lonelier than female Inidan adolescents. There was no signi…
